A new addition to Disneyland’s iconic Haunted Mansion attraction has stirred up a wave of criticism from fans, many of whom are voicing their discontent with the recently introduced Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond gift shop. The shop, which will open this winter near the ride’s entrance, is being met with a largely negative reception from the Mansion fanbase—a rarity in a community that is usually divided but rarely this united in its disapproval.

While it’s not uncommon for changes to attractions to spark debate among Disney enthusiasts, the response to this particular update is unique. For years, fans have been vocal about tweaks and updates to the Haunted Mansion, but the addition of this gift shop has struck a nerve unlike any other. Early reactions indicate that almost no one has anything positive to say, and the store isn’t even fully completed yet.
A Gift Shop That Doesn’t Fit the Mood
The primary issue seems to be the style of the building and the lack of details. Located just outside the ride, the store is named after the famous psychic medium, Madame Leota, whose disembodied head guides riders through the attraction. But unlike the haunting, atmospheric tone of the ride, the store’s modern design, bright lighting, and merch-heavy layout have been described as jarring and out of place.
The shop offers a range of Haunted Mansion-themed merchandise, including apparel, collectibles, and novelty items, many of which feature Madame Leota herself. While themed merchandise isn’t new to Disney parks, the style of the building, which resembles a barn, has not gone over well with fans. One fan says:
“Haunted Mansion changes often spark debate and division in the community. Fans will either love or hate it. This new gift shop is the first thing I’ve seen every Mansion fan hate. So far, everyone has a problem with little to nothing positive to say, and it’s not even done yet.”
What Was Disney Thinking?
For Disney, the backlash is a reminder of just how deeply attached fans are to the Haunted Mansion. As one of the park’s most popular and enduring attractions, it holds a special place in the hearts of many, and any perceived threat to its carefully crafted atmosphere is bound to stir strong emotions.
As the store nears its official completion, many are wondering if Disney will listen to the fan outcry and reconsider the design. So far, the company has remained silent on the matter, offering no indication that any changes are planned.
Star Tours empties DIRECTLY into a gift shop, it’s a cheap dirty way to try and milk those dollars from visitors. It’s a surprise its taken this long to Disney to try it with other rides.
Several rides empty into a gift shop, small world, Astro blasters, toy story mania, just to name a few. There’s actually a documentary about this called “exit through the gift shop” is the title I believe.
Not so much about Disney, but the plot to take your money. After the screenings there was a table set-up with posters that people raced to grab.
Sorry, I think it’s fine. Really tired of the whiners. It’s simple you hate it, don’t go.
People complaining just to complain. Honestly if you don’t like it, you be the Imaginear then. Stop taking life so seriously and enjoy the little things. God damn.
