‘Buffy’ Reboot: Sarah Michelle Gellar’s New Role Confirmed, Main Characters Revealed
The long-anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival is officially underway at Hulu, with the series reportedly nearing a deal for a pilot episode.
The series is set to reintroduce fans–and a new generation–to the beloved Buffyverse, albeit with a fresh face at the forefront. However, it will mark a significant departure from the original, as TVLine has now reported that the new series will follow Nova, a 16-year-old girl who is described as “very smart and a bit of a loner.”
Nova’s character will lead the show alongside two companions, Hugo and Gracie. Hugo is an “out-and-proud nerd” with a wealthy background, while Gracie, a vampire expert, will serve as a protégé to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers.
The article also reports that the series will feature Gellar in a “recurring guest star” role, with her character presumably guiding the new Slayer through the next chapter of the Buffy universe. This news follows speculation about Gellar’s role, as fans had hoped for a larger presence, but it’s clear now that the story will focus on Nova and her journey.
Behind the scenes, writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, best known for Poker Face, are handling the script, while Chloé Zhao, the visionary director of Eternals and Nomadland, is on board to direct and executive produce alongside the original show’s EPs, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton. Sarah Michelle Gellar is also onboard as an EP.

Following the announcement in February, Gellar, 47, took to Instagram to express her excitement about the project, assuring fans that the revival will be something special.
She thanked fans for their patience and support, saying the process of creating the new series had been long but promising. “This will be for you,” she told her followers, making it clear that this revival is aimed at those who have kept Buffy in their hearts for years.
As casting gets underway, fans are eager to see how the new Slayer and her companions will interact with the larger Buffyverse. Either way, with Gellar’s involvement, even in a smaller capacity, the revival is already shaping up to be a must-watch.
It is not known whether any other actor from the original series is returning.
