Sarah Michelle Gellar, the actress synonymous with the beloved Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, has recently opened up about the prospect of returning to her iconic role. Over the years, Gellar has often expressed hesitation about reprising Buffy Summers, but her recent comments suggest a slight shift in perspective.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Gellar reflected on the potential for a Buffy revival. “I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” she explained. However, she acknowledged that watching other successful revivals, such as And Just Like That and Dexter: Original Sin, has made her reconsider the idea. “Seeing there are ways to do it definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe,’” she admitted.
This new openness comes after years of firmly standing by the series’ original ending. Speaking to SFX Magazine in 2013, Gellar had said, “I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”
Despite Gellar’s reluctance to step back into the role, the idea of reviving Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues to spark interest. Dolly Parton, who was an uncredited producer on the original series, recently revealed that discussions are ongoing. “They’re still working on that [a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot],” Parton shared with Business Insider earlier this year. “They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.”

The original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, concluded with a definitive ending. Sunnydale, the fictional California town built on a Hellmouth, was destroyed, and Buffy’s battle against evil ended on a note of empowerment, with Slayers across the world activated to carry on the fight.
As for Gellar, she remains torn between nostalgia and practicality. While her recent comments suggest she’s more open than ever to a revival, she’s also hinted at her desire for a new generation to take up the mantle. Whether that means passing the stake to a new Slayer or reimagining the story entirely remains uncertain.
Fans, however, are eager for anything that brings the Buffyverse back to life. Whether Gellar reprises her role or simply cheers from the side-lines, her legacy as Buffy Summers is indelible. For now, the possibility of a revival hangs in the air, much like the question Gellar herself poses: “Well, maybe.”
