MyMagic+ and Disney Dining

Visiting the Magic Kingdom recently, I was surprised to see the entrance kiosks being removed for “future improvements.”  It immediately peaked my curiosity since Disney isn’t one to increase wait times by taking down a number of turnstiles.  Then I found out about the new MyMagic+ that Disney is rolling out park wide over the next few months.  This new technology represents a great leap forward for enjoying everything that Disney has to offer.

MyMagic+ is new system that enables guests to plan their Walt Disney World vacation even before they arrive.  As described by Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, on the DisneyParks blog, MyMagic+ “will give guests more opportunities to customize and personalize their entire visit.”  Visitors will now be able to make guaranteed reservations for meals, show time seatings, and theme park attractions before even stepping foot on Disney property.

Key to MyMagic+ is the My Disney Experience website and mobile app that guests can access before and during their vacation stay.  Continues Staggs, “My Disney Experience gives [people] the flexibility to plan as much or as little as they’d like…. They can book dining and other experiences and reserve times for their favorite attractions, shows, and more through an enhanced FastPass system [called] FastPass+.”  By accessing My Disney Experience through their smartphones or certain Guest Relations kiosks, vacationers can change their plans as easily as they change their minds.

So, the reason for the new turnstiles?  MyMagic+ also relies on a new wristband developed by Disney called the MagicBand.  This RFID device carries guests’ information, serving as a “room key, theme park ticket, access to FastPass+ selections, PhotoPass card, and optional payment account” according to the DisneyParks blog.  Resort guests and Annual Passholders are slated to be the first to get MagicBands.  Off-property guests will have an RFID card to use the MyMagic+ system but will be able to purchase MagicBands for an additional fee.

For Disney Dining fans, MyMagic+ offers greater convenience.  It will be easier to manage FastPass times and dining reservations so that they don’t conflict with one another.  Being able to confidently set ride reservations for popular attractions without having to be at the parks when they open may mean you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast or lunch at your resort.  Then there’s the ease of payment too.  Meals and snacks under $50 can be paid for simply by using the MagicBand as a room charge card.
