Michael J. Fox Returns in New ‘Back to the Future’ Film, Trailer and Release Date Revealed

Even decades after its release, Back to the Future (1985) continues to capture imaginations, but the story hasn’t been limited to the silver screen.

Will Back to the Future 4 or a Reboot Happen?

Fans continue to speculate about a fourth film, though writer/producer Bob Gale has consistently opposed the idea. Director/writer Robert Zemeckis, however, has expressed interest in adapting the musical rather than producing a traditional sequel.

As for the film’s stars, Michael J. Fox has said he’s unlikely to return as Marty McFly, while Christopher Lloyd remains open to reprising his role as Doc Emmett Brown.

Back to the Future‘s Expanding Universe

For now, a fourth film is unlikely; however, the franchise has expanded in unexpected directions over the decades—from comics and video games to theme park attractions and more. Its most recent iteration is the hugely popular stage musical, which first premiered in Manchester, U.K., in 2020 and later found success in London’s West End.

Back to the Future: The Musical combines familiar tunes from the 1985 film with new songs by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, and a book by Bob Gale. Broadway productions began in 2023, followed by a North American tour in 2024.

An Unexpected New Movie Is Coming

Now, the musical’s journey to the stage is the focus of a new documentary.

A Future on Stage: The Making of a Broadway Musical, produced by Nacelle with Gale and filmmaker Brian Stillman, premieres on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube, and other platforms on March 24. The feature includes behind-the-scenes insights from the musical’s cast and crew, along with key members from the films, including Zemeckis, Gale, and Fox.
