‘MandoVerse’ Meltdown? Disney+ Cuts Live-Action ‘Star Wars’ to Single 2027 Series
Star Wars once seemed like a permanent fixture on Disney+.
For several years, Lucasfilm kept new live-action shows moving through the service, giving fans something to watch between theatrical releases. That strategy produced everything from The Mandalorian and Andor to Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka.
The schedule heading into 2027 tells a much different story.
Lucasfilm still has Star Wars projects on the way, including a major theatrical release. But when it comes to live-action television on Disney+, only one series currently has a confirmed spot on the 2027 calendar.
And it belongs to Ahsoka Tano.
Ahsoka Returns to Disney+ in Early 2027
Ahsoka Season 2 will arrive on Disney+ in early 2027, bringing Rosario Dawson back as Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice.
Ahsoka first became a major Star Wars character in animation before Dawson brought her to live action in The Mandalorian. That appearance eventually led to her own Disney+ series, which completed its first season in October 2023.
Nearly four years later, the story will finally continue.
Dawson will return alongside Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Lars Mikkelsen, Eman Esfandi, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Hayden Christensen.
The new season follows what has otherwise been a fairly active 2026 for Star Wars.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord reached Disney+ in April. The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) returned the franchise to movie theaters in May, and Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi arrived on Disney+ in August.
Once 2027 begins, however, Lucasfilm’s live-action streaming plans become much less crowded.
One Star Wars Show Currently Stands Alone
Right now, Ahsoka Season 2 is the only confirmed live-action Star Wars television series scheduled to reach Disney+ in 2027.
That’s a major departure from the pace Lucasfilm set during the streaming service’s early years.
Disney+ previously hosted a steady run of shows that included The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew.
Not every project found the same level of success.
The Acolyte attracted significant interest early in its run before experiencing a sharp decline in audience. Disney ultimately chose not to move forward with a second season.
Star Wars also had a disappointing box-office result. The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) grossed around $345.2 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie.
Those results arrive as Lucasfilm appears to be taking a more selective approach to its output.
That doesn’t mean Star Wars is leaving theaters again. Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter (2027), starring Ryan Gosling, is scheduled for 2027.
On Disney+, though, Ahsoka currently has the live-action calendar to itself.
Disney+ Isn’t Running Out of Major Franchises
Star Wars may have a thinner streaming lineup, but Disney+ still has plenty of recognizable franchises filling its future schedule.
Marvel remains particularly busy.
Daredevil: Born Again is expected to continue with Season 3 in 2027. Charlie Cox stars as Matt Murdock opposite Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, continuing the Marvel television world that began during the Netflix era.
Meanwhile, Marvel Animation already has more X-Men ’97 planned. Seasons 3 and 4 are in development, giving the animated revival a future beyond its second season.
Disney+ also has other projects coming down the pipeline.
Avengers: Mightiest Friends will feature younger versions of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Black Panther, adding to the roster of Marvel series aimed at younger viewers.
Then there’s Afterlife with Archie, which takes the familiar Archie Comics characters into a zombie-apocalypse story. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is overseeing the project.
Together, those shows give Disney+ several established brands to work with, even as live-action Star Wars becomes less frequent.
Star Wars Is Taking a Different Approach
Lucasfilm hasn’t abandoned Star Wars television.
Still, the days when several live-action Star Wars shows seemed to be moving through Disney+ at once haven’t continued.
More projects could always be announced before 2027 arrives. For now, though, the lineup is unusually simple.
Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) will carry Star Wars back into theaters, while Ahsoka Season 2 remains the franchise’s only confirmed live-action Disney+ series for the year.
After years of constant expansion, Star Wars appears to be choosing its streaming projects more carefully.
And at least for now, Ahsoka Tano is carrying that side of the galaxy by herself.
