Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor best known for playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died. He was 54 years old. His role as the quick-witted, loveable son on the iconic NBC sitcom made him a household name and earned him critical acclaim, including a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Warner was on vacation in Costa Rica with his family when tragedy struck, according to a report from ABC News:
Warner drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday, Costa Rican National Police told ABC News. Warner’s official cause of death was asphyxia, police said.
Warner died near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica, police said. Police said he was caught by a high current in the water and was discovered Sunday afternoon.
Warner was formally identified by Costa Rica’s national police.

Warner began acting at the age of twelve, and just two years later, he landed what would become the defining role of his career—playing the only son of Bill Cosby’s character on The Cosby Show. The series aired for eight seasons and Warner appeared in more than 190 episodes. Over the years, he earned more than a dozen award nominations and won several honors, including the Young Artist Award.
Despite his fame, Warner lived a very private life. He kept his personal world out of the spotlight and never shared the names of his wife or daughter, citing a desire to protect their privacy.
