Lucasfilm May Be Using ‘Mando and Grogu’ To Launch ‘Star Wars’ Legacy Era, Actor’s Comments Suggest
The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) is set to bring Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu to the big screen for the first time, continuing the story that helped define the modern Star Wars era on Disney+.

Directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor, the film takes place after the fall of the Empire, with the New Republic relying on unlikely allies to stabilise a fractured galaxy. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, alongside Grogu, with Sigourney Weaver joining the franchise as New Republic officer Colonel Ward.
Marketing has so far kept much of the story under wraps, but that hasn’t stopped speculation from intensifying—particularly after Weaver’s comments at the film’s premiere.
During the film’s premiere in LA, Weaver said that the film features familiar characters who have not appeared in a Star Wars movie “for a long time,” teasing fans without naming names.
“We have so many other amazing characters in this movie, some of whom we haven’t seen in a Star Wars movie for a long time, and I think everyone’s going to be really thrilled,” she said.
But who could she be referring to?

The most immediate assumption points toward the original trilogy’s central trio: Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo.
Weaver even previously hinted that Leia might show up in the film, telling Empire Magazine (via SFFGazette.com) in March that her character Colonel Ward and the Princess “go way back.”
However, there are other possibilities, including characters from the prequel trilogy. Or perhaps even the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, whose Rotta the Hutt already appears in the upcoming film. Or maybe she’s referring to Yoda, who could show up as a Force Ghost to communicate with Grogu, who’s a member of the same species.

At present, nothing has been confirmed by Lucasfilm, and official promotional material continues to focus heavily on Din Djarin’s mission for the New Republic, which involves tracking Imperial remnants across the Outer Rim.
Whether Weaver’s comments point to a major surprise or simply refer to other characters from throughout Star Wars‘ long history in film remains to be seen, but fan speculation is already running high ahead of the film’s May 22 release.

The Mandalorian & Grogu
“The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy,” the film’s official synopsis for The Mandalorian & Grogu on StarWars.com reads. “As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”
The Mandalorian & Grogu is directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Ian Bryce, with music composed by Ludwig Göransson.
The film releases in theaters on May 22.
