Could a New ‘Star Wars’ Animated Trilogy With the Original Characters Replace the Sequels?
Few topics divide Star Wars fans more than the sequel trilogy. Since The Rise of Skywalker (2019) brought the Skywalker Saga to an end, rumors claiming Disney plans to erase the films from canon have circulated online. Now, those theories have resurfaced yet again.
Several online creators are claiming Lucasfilm could eventually move away from the sequel era entirely, though there’s currently no official evidence supporting those reports.
Similar rumors appeared before Ahsoka (2023), when some fans believed the World Between Worlds would create an alternate Star Wars timeline. But that never happened.
Still, the continued backlash surrounding the sequels has left many fans wondering whether Lucasfilm should refocus its attention on the beloved original trilogy era instead.
One possible solution could come through animation. Recent reports suggest Luke Skywalker may appear in a future Tales project, reigniting speculation that Lucasfilm could finally give Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Luke their own dedicated animated series or film.
While Star Wars animation has heavily explored the prequel timeline through projects like The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, the original characters have largely remained absent outside smaller appearances in shows like Forces of Destiny and Galaxy of Adventures.
An animated project would also allow Lucasfilm to continue using the classic characters without extensive CGI recreations or recasting legacy actors.
The idea could even allow the franchise to revisit the years between Return of the Jedi (1983) and The Force Awakens (2015), potentially reworking some of the character arcs that fans disliked in the sequel trilogy.
Lucasfilm hasn’t announced any such project, and the sequel trilogy remains firmly canon. However, the growing interest surrounding original trilogy animation proves many fans still see Luke, Han, and Leia as the emotional core of Star Wars.
