Despite playing huge roles in two wildly successful Disney films that have been nominated for Academy Awards, Lin Manuel Miranda has announced he will not be attending the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.

The news of Lin Manuel Miranda’s decision to forgo the Oscars this year came as a surprise to many, as the musical genius and lyricist has been nominated for an Academy Award, as have two of the projects to which he’s contributed in the past year.
Miranda, who has been nominated for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) for “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s Encanto, will not attend the Academy Awards. Miranda tweeted on Saturday about his wife, Vanessa Nadal, having tested positive for COVID-19. Though he and his children have tested negative, Miranda said he won’t attend out of an abundance of caution.

According to Variety, if Miranda wins the for which he has been nominated this season, he would “achieve EGOT status,” an honor in show business that means the honoree has won an , , an , and a during his career. If he were to achieve the honor, he’d be the third youngest person in history to do so.
Disney’s Encanto, for which Lin Manuel Miranda wrote songs that have gone viral and made it to the top of Billboard’s charts, has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Additionally, Tick, Tick . . . BOOM!, in which Lin Manuel Miranda made his feature directorial debut, has been nominated for two Oscars.
In his tweet on Saturday, Lin Manuel Miranda also said his wife is “doing fine,” and that he’ll be cheering for those he’s worked with on both films.
“Cheering for my TickTickBoom & Encanto families w my own family, alongside all of you, ALL of you,” his tweet reads.
The 94th Academy Awards will air live on ABC Sunday evening at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
