‘Lightyear’ Director Addresses Chris Evans Voicing Buzz Lightyear Instead of Tim Allen

We are just about one week away from the premiere of Disney and Pixar’s newest film, Lightyear. According to Disney, Lightyear was Andy’s favorite movie and was the inspiration for the Buzz Lightyear toy that Andy excitedly received for his birthday in the first Toy Story film. Lightyear stars Chris Evans as the voice of the titular Space Ranger, along with Keke Palmer who voices Izzy Hawthorne, Peter Sohn as SOX, Taika Waititi as Mo Morrison, Dale Soules as Darby Steele, and Uzo Aduba as Alisha Hawthorne.

The choice to cast Evans as the voice of Buzz Lightyear was a controversial one for Disney and Pixar fans. As most know, Tim Allen has been the voice of Buzz Lightyear for more than two decades — voicing him for the entire four-film franchise. Many thought that Disney had made a mistake in changing the voice of the iconic character. However, Lightyear producer Galyn Susman thought the choice to change up the voice was a clear one.

According to Consequence Film,

In a recent press conference, Lightyear producer Galyn Susman explained that a lot of thought had gone into the casting of Evans. “Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear the toy,” she said. “We weren’t making a Toy Story movie. We’re making Buzz Lightyear’s movie. And so first and foremost, we just needed a different person playing that Lightyear, separate from the toy.”

Director Angus MacLane had an additional explanation as to why Buzz needed to be played by Evans, specifically. This time, he said, Lightyear is “a little more well-rounded. Technically he’s a bit smarter because he’s not comic relief. He has to be funny, but not too goofy. And that’s why we went with Chris.”

Some have accused Disney of not using Allen for the new film because of his political views. Allen is an outspoken conservative and people have said that Disney is heading in a liberal direction, so they didn’t want Allen as a part of the team. However, that could not be further from the truth. It is important to remember that Allen is still a big part of the Disney family. While Allen may not be in Lightyear, he is currently set to star in the new Santa Clause series coming to Disney+.
