Summer at Walt Disney World usually brings longer park hours, seasonal entertainment, and special experiences for families. This year, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is adding another reason for guests to spend extra time exploring the park.

As part of the Cool Kids Summer celebration, visitors are now finding several fan-favorite Disney characters making appearances near Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. The surprise additions include Dopey and Grumpy from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) as well as Rafiki from The Lion King (1994).
For many guests, that’s welcome news.
Character meet-and-greets remain one of the most popular experiences at Walt Disney World, especially when Disney brings out characters that aren’t regularly available throughout the parks. While Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and several Disney princesses have permanent locations, encounters with characters like Dopey, Grumpy, and Rafiki can be much harder to find.
That’s part of what makes these appearances stand out.
Guests have reported seeing Dopey and Grumpy meeting together before rotating with Rafiki throughout the day. The characters are appearing outdoors near the entrance area of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, giving families another activity to enjoy between attractions.
Unlike many scheduled meet-and-greets, Disney has not posted official appearance times. That means guests may need a little patience and luck if they’re hoping to meet a specific character.
The addition ties directly into Disney’s Cool Kids Summer initiative, which launched across Walt Disney World on May 26. The seasonal event focuses heavily on younger visitors, offering extra entertainment, interactive experiences, and family-friendly activities throughout the resort.

At Hollywood Studios, much of that effort has centered around Animation Courtyard. Disney recently introduced Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live and expanded character offerings in the area, creating more experiences geared toward younger guests.
The strategy makes sense. Hollywood Studios has changed dramatically over the past decade, becoming home to major attractions like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, and other high-demand experiences. While those additions have been successful, Disney has also worked to ensure the park continues offering activities for families with small children.
Character interactions help fill that role perfectly.
For many parents, meeting a favorite Disney character creates memories that last far longer than a ride queue or attraction experience. Children often remember those personal moments years after a vacation ends.
That’s especially true when the character is someone they weren’t expecting to see.

Dopey and Grumpy have long been among Disney’s most recognizable animated characters, but they rarely receive the same attention as Snow White herself. Rafiki has also maintained a loyal following thanks to his memorable role in one of Disney’s most beloved animated films.
Whether these appearances remain throughout the entire summer or operate for a limited time, they offer another reason for guests to slow down and explore beyond the park’s biggest attractions.
Sometimes the most memorable Disney moments aren’t found on a ride at all. Sometimes they’re waiting around the corner with a photo opportunity and a smile.
