The Game That Started It All

The original Hogwarts Legacy launched in 2023 through Portkey Games and developer Avalanche Software, dropping players into an open-world RPG set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World roughly a century before the events of the Harry Potter books and their film adaptations starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Starting as a new Hogwarts student, players move through classes, learn spells, forge relationships with professors and peers, and ultimately find themselves at the center of an ancient magical secret.
The game launched amid a notable boycott campaign connected to J.K. Rowling’s controversial anti-transgender views. Despite that, it sold over 40 million copies across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch as of the time of publication — making it one of the best-selling video games in history.
