Magic Kingdom is preparing for a major transformation, and this time, it’s Frontierland that’s getting a complete overhaul. Disney has confirmed that part of the land will be repurposed for a Cars-themed expansion, bringing the world of Radiator Springs to life in a way that’s never been seen before in the park. While this exciting addition promises high-speed thrills and interactive experiences, it also means that some longtime attractions will be permanently closing to make room for the changes.
One of the biggest impacts of this expansion will be the removal of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America. Since Magic Kingdom’s opening in 1971, these areas have been a peaceful retreat for guests looking to step away from the hustle and bustle of the park. However, Disney has decided to repurpose this space to fit the upcoming Cars-themed land. The Liberty Square Riverboat, which has floated along the Rivers of America for decades, will also be shutting down as the waterway itself is being removed.
While the decision to transform Frontierland might come as a surprise to some, Disney has been making strategic updates to its parks to keep up with guest demand. The Cars expansion was first teased at D23, where Disney announced that new lands were being considered for the space beyond Big Thunder Mountain. However, in a surprising turn, Disney later revealed that the Cars land would instead take over part of Frontierland rather than expanding further beyond it.
The new Cars expansion is expected to feature at least two new attractions, one of which will focus on an off-road racing adventure. Guests will be able to explore a reimagined version of Radiator Springs, complete with themed dining locations and immersive storytelling that brings the world of Lightning McQueen and his friends to life.
Construction is set to begin in 2025, and while Disney hasn’t announced an official opening date, it is expected to be one of the most highly anticipated additions to Magic Kingdom in years. Fans of Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat have only a short window of time left to experience these classic attractions before they close permanently.
Disney continues to evolve, balancing nostalgia with innovation, and this latest expansion proves that the company is committed to keeping Magic Kingdom fresh and engaging for future generations.
