Long before HBO decided to revisit the story, Harry Potter became one of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises.

Those roles carry plenty of history.

Richard Harris and Michael Gambon previously portrayed Dumbledore. Maggie Smith played McGonagall, while Robbie Coltrane became closely associated with Hagrid. Tom Felton and Matthew Lewis also became familiar faces as Draco and Neville.

With so many characters getting new actors, disagreement was always likely. However, one decision has produced particularly heated reactions.

Paapa Essiedu Faces Backlash as Severus Snape

Paapa Essiedu will play Severus Snape, following Alan Rickman’s memorable performance throughout the original films.

Some fans have criticized HBO for casting a black actor as Snape, citing the character’s appearance in the books. Viewers can certainly disagree with a recasting or believe another performer would better fit the role.

But some reactions have gone far beyond reasonable disagreement.

Essiedu has revealed that he received racist abuse and death threats after landing the role. Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the original films, has defended Essiedu and condemned the racist attacks.

Fans don’t have to support every decision HBO makes. Racist remarks, personal attacks, and threats against an actor, however, cross an entirely different line.
