The breakout star of the Hawkeye miniseries doesn’t want to play a superhero forever and is finished with the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the foreseeable future, a new interview reveals.

Marvel Studios is on the lookout for new stars without a whole lot of success. The titanic conclusion to the Infinity Saga, Avengers: Endgame (2019), cleared the decks of many of the original members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Robert Downey Jr. Since then, the franchise has struggled to find actors who could carry tentpole summer films in the same way.
Initially, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man seemed promising until Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) disappointed both at the box office and fan expectations of the proper introduction of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). Brie Larson grossed more than a billion dollars as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel (2019), but the follow-up film, The Marvels (2023), holds the unpleasant distinction of being the worst-performing MCU movie to date.

Even the remaining original Avengers are not helping the struggling MCU all that much. Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) was generally perceived as a lukewarm entry in the series (by star Chris Hemsworth, no less), and Mark Ruffalo is pretty sure that Kevin Feige will never greenlight another Hulk film. That leaves Jeremy Renner, whose sole starring outing as Clint Barton, the Disney+ miniseries Hawkeye, was essentially a jumping-off platform for two new stars: Hailee Steinfeld and Alaqua Cox.
As Kate Bishop, Hailee Steinfeld seems to be being prepped to be the new Hawkeye in the same sense as Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is being slotted in as a new Hulk. She is likely to be a part of the rumored in-development film Young Avengers, but, at the very least, it is unlikely that we have seen the last of Bishop.

The same is not certain of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), AKA Echo, the cybernetically enhanced crime enforcer first introduced in the Hawkeye miniseries. Echo was quickly spun off into her own eponymous five-episode series, which further fleshed out her relationship with the Kingpin of Crime, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), and featured an appearance from Daredevil (Charlie Cox). Although the show, which introduced the “Marvel Spotlight” banner, was highly promoted at the time, there seem to be no plans for the character to reappear in the MCU.

However, that may not bother Alaqua Cox very much. In a new interview with The Wrap, the actress revealed that she no longer wanted to play a villain character and would like to branch out from her previous roles; while she doesn’t come right out and say it, it pretty strongly implies that she does not have further offers from Marvel Studios in the works.

Alaqua Cox said:
“I want to keep acting, yes, but I want to try something new. I want to try different roles, maybe a comedy or horror or thriller, some things like that. I don’t want to play a bad guy. Because, you know, it’s very tough to get into that bad guy character. There’s a lot of emotion involved. So, I think I’d rather do a new role, try new things.”
It has not been announced if Cox will appear in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again Marvel series alongside Charlie Cox (no relation) and Vincent D’Onofrio, but it seems that she is pretty ready to move on from the MCU. Kevin Feige must still be looking for the next big Marvel star.
