‘Harry Potter’ Legend Planning UK Exit After Admitting She “Doesn’t Have Long To Live”

One Harry Potter actor is looking far beyond Hogwarts.

For years, Miriam Margolyes has occupied a strange place within the Harry Potter fandom. The actor, who portrayed Professor Pomona Sprout in the film series, has repeatedly criticized the intensity of adult fan culture surrounding the franchise despite remaining one of its most recognizable supporting stars.

Her comments have frequently gone viral.

Margolyes previously declared that Harry Potter ā€œis for childrenā€ and argued that grown fans should eventually ā€œget over it.ā€ Those remarks placed her alongside a growing group of original cast members who have publicly complicated their relationship with the wizarding world in recent years.

The franchise itself, however, has shown little sign of slowing down.

Warner Bros. is currently developing its rebooted HBO adaptation expected to span multiple seasons, while Universal continues expanding its Harry Potter footprint through theme parks, experiences, and attractions. The brand remains one of the most commercially valuable entertainment properties in the world.

At the same time, the actors tied to the original films are entering a very different phase of life.

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have all publicly distanced themselves from J. K. Rowling’s views on the transgender community. Other cast members have spoken more broadly about fame, aging, and the lasting impact of the franchise decades later.

Now, Margolyes is speaking openly about mortality itself.

During a recent appearance on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, the conversation moved beyond Harry Potter entirely and toward Margolyes’ future plans outside the United Kingdom.

The 84-year-old actor confirmed she hopes to spend the remainder of her life living in Italy with her long-term partner, Heather Sutherland.

ā€œ[Brexit] has affected my life because I can’t go and live in the house that I bought,ā€ Margolyes said. ā€œ[It’s the] first house I ever bought in Italy, which is where Heather and I wanted to end our lives together.ā€

Margolyes explained that Brexit restrictions have complicated those plans significantly.

ā€œI’m going to have to become Dutch or Italian,ā€ she said. ā€œI’m already Australian as well as English, so how many nationalities do you have to have before you can live in the house that’s yours?ā€

The actor’s comments arrive amid increasingly candid discussions surrounding her health.

In recent years, Margolyes has openly discussed mobility struggles caused by spinal stenosis and admitted she may eventually require a wheelchair. She has also spoken publicly about her awareness of aging and how frequently she now thinks about death.

In a 2023 interview with British Vogue, Margolyes acknowledged that her outlook on life has changed dramatically.

ā€œWhen you’re young, you never think about death. You just think about your next f*** basically. I think about death a lot,ā€ she said.

ā€œYou can’t help but be aware that the amount of time ahead is less than the time before you.ā€

That same year, the actor underwent a transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure to avoid open-heart surgery. Following the operation, Margolyes joked publicly that she now has ā€œa cow’s heart.ā€

She has also previously admitted, ā€œI haven’t got long to live.ā€

The Wizarding World Keeps Expanding as Original Stars Move On

Margolyes’ latest comments arrive during another major turning point for the Harry Potter franchise.

HBO’s upcoming reboot is expected to completely restart the story for a new generation, with each season adapting one of J. K. Rowling’s original novels. Warner Bros. Discovery has positioned the series as one of the company’s biggest long-term streaming investments (although Margolyes has criticized its existence).

Meanwhile, Universal continues expanding the franchise inside its parks.

Epic Universe recently introduced a new Ministry of Magic-inspired land connected to the wizarding world, joining existing Harry Potter areas in Orlando, Hollywood, Japan, Beijing, and beyond. The franchise also continues driving major attendance through studio tours and live experiences.

Margolyes, however, has remained skeptical about the culture surrounding it all.

During her appearance on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, the actor again revisited her frustrations with adult fandom.

ā€œWhen people say on Cameo, ā€˜we’re having a ‘Harry Potter’ themed wedding,’ and I would say, ā€˜Well, I think it’s time you let that go,ā€™ā€ she said.

Even so, Margolyes admitted she now better understands why so many fans continue holding onto the series emotionally.

ā€œYou can’t let go of bits of your childhood, and I didn’t realize that because it wasn’t my childhood,ā€ she said. ā€œI was in my 50s or 60s when I did that.ā€
