Good News: Disney Restores Perk Resort Guests Lost Last Week

A few days ago, we covered a transportation perk vanishing at two of Walt Disney World’s most popular resorts.

Time for an update, and this one is good news.

Free transportation is one of the biggest reasons to stay on the property. Every Disney hotel gets bus service to the parks and Disney Springs, but a select few get something better. Monorail. Skyliner. Boats.

The EPCOT Resort area sits at the top of that hierarchy, and guests pay a premium specifically for it. Walking or boating to two theme parks beats waiting on buses, and that factor directly into booking decisions.

So when part of that network goes down, people feel it.

Last week it did. Now it is fixed.

Service Is Back

FriendShip boat service has returned at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resort.

The shared dock closed August 17 for maintenance, with Disney targeting an August 21 reopening. Disney hit the date, and guests can board FriendShip boats from the Yacht and Beach dock again.

Five days offline. About as brief as transportation closures get at Walt Disney World.

Where These Boats Go To At Disney

For anyone unfamiliar with the route.

FriendShip boats from the Yacht Club and the Beach Club serve:

Two theme parks and three neighboring resorts, from a dock just outside your hotel, are free.

Genuinely one of the strongest transportation perks on property, and a big reason the EPCOT Resort area charges what it charges.

What Happened During the Closure

Disney did not strand anyone, which is standard when a specialized option goes offline.

Direct bus transportation to Disney’s Hollywood Studios ran from both the Yacht Club and Beach Club bus stops. Cleanest fix for the hardest destination to reach on foot.

For EPCOT, most people walked. Yacht Club and Beach Club are within walking distance of EPCOT’s International Gateway entrance, roughly 10 to 15 minutes away.

Disney’s BoardWalk and the Swan and Dolphin hotels stayed reachable on foot, too, using the EPCOT Resort area pathways.

Why It Still Stung

Short closure, alternatives available, no big deal? Not quite.

A 10 to 15-minute walk means wildly different things depending on who is walking it. Families with small kids. Anyone pushing a stroller. People heading back after eight hours in a park.

And this landed in the middle of August, during a stretch of repeated Central Florida heat advisories with the index pushing past 110. A walk that is lovely in November is a completely different proposition.

Hollywood Studios alternatives worked but ran more slowly. The direct bus was the play. Guests could also walk to Disney’s BoardWalk and use the FriendShip dock there, or ride a much longer Skyliner route through Disney’s Riviera Resort and Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort before transferring.

That last one technically works. Nobody picked it.

It Was Never a Permanent Cut From Disney

Worth saying plainly, because perk-removal headlines read worse than reality.

Disney never announced that the FriendShip service was being permanently discontinued at either resort. Scheduled dock maintenance, published end date, delivered on time.

That distinction matters when reading Disney World transportation news. Maintenance closures and permanent service changes look identical in a headline and are nothing alike.

Other Work Is Still Going

The dock closure overlapped with several ongoing resort projects.

Work continues at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

The BoardWalk project matters most for this area. The Village Green closed from August 10 through September 4, with additional lobby corridor closures scheduled through November.

So the boats are back, but anyone staying in or visiting the EPCOT Resort area should still check what is open at their specific hotel.

Looking Ahead at Disney

Boats are running normally. No follow-up closure announced.

Yacht Club or Beach Club stay coming up? Your full transportation package is intact. Boats to two parks, walking access to EPCOT, and buses everywhere else.

That combination is exactly why these resorts sell out, especially during EPCOT festival season.

And with the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival opening August 27, the timing could not be much better. Getting from your room to World Showcase without touching a bus is precisely what people book these hotels for.
