Disney World Confirms Sudden Suspension of Free Resort Transportation Service

Guests paying to stay at one of Walt Disney World’s Deluxe properties have one less perk despite the cost.

Free transportation has long been one of the biggest conveniences of staying inside the Disney World bubble. Depending on the hotel, guests can use buses, boats, the Disney Skyliner, or the monorail to move around the massive resort without having to drive themselves.

For guests at one longtime Disney property, however, a popular route has stopped operating. The interruption isn’t permanent, but it could affect vacation plans for guests visiting over the next several weeks.

Staying at Disney World Comes With Extra Benefits

Disney gives its hotel guests several advantages beyond simply staying close to the theme parks.

Resort guests receive earlier access to dining reservations and Lightning Lane selections. They can also use Early Theme Park Entry, which allows them to enter the parks 30 minutes before the regular opening time.

The benefits go even further for eligible Deluxe Resort and Deluxe Villa Resort guests. On select nights, they can stay inside certain parks later through Extended Evening Theme Park Hours.

Transportation is another major piece of the package.

Disney operates complimentary buses, boats, monorails, and the Disney Skyliner throughout the property, although available options depend on the resort and destination.

Now, some Deluxe Villa Resort guests have temporarily lost one of those choices.

One Resort Has Temporarily Lost a Popular Route

The transportation interruption affects Disney’s Old Key West Resort.

The Sassagoula River Cruise, which normally connects Old Key West with Disney Springs, is currently unavailable, and the closure is expected to continue through early August.

For guests who regularly use the boats, that’s more than simply losing another way to reach their destination.

The river cruise offers a relaxing alternative to Disney’s buses and can be an enjoyable part of the trip. Guests can leave their resort and take a water taxi to Disney Springs for dining, shopping, or an evening away from the parks.

Old Key West has also been part of Walt Disney World for decades. The property opened in 1991 as Disney Vacation Club’s first resort and remains a Deluxe Villa Resort today.

Guests aren’t completely out of options while the boats remain unavailable, though.

Buses Will Keep Guests Moving

Old Key West guests can continue using Disney’s complimentary buses to travel between the resort and Disney Springs.

That means the suspension doesn’t prevent anyone from reaching the shopping and dining district. It simply removes the choice of taking the more leisurely water route.

Guests should also be prepared for Disney’s transportation restrictions when leaving Disney Springs for a resort.

Cast Members may verify that guests are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel before allowing them to use resort-bound transportation. As a result, visitors can’t necessarily use Disney Springs as a transportation hub for touring Disney hotels when they aren’t staying on property.

Eligible Old Key West guests can continue boarding the buses during the boat interruption, although they should be ready for Cast Members to confirm their resort status.

The Loss Can Matter at a Deluxe Property

A temporary boat closure may not sound like a major problem, especially when buses remain available. For guests paying Deluxe-level prices, however, transportation choices can be part of what makes the higher cost worthwhile.

Old Key West offers more than accommodations. Its amenities, location, and access to other areas of Disney World all contribute to the resort experience.

The Sassagoula River Cruise is part of that convenience.

Guests can normally walk from their resort to the dock, board a boat, and enjoy a scenic trip directly to Disney Springs. Losing that option could be particularly disappointing for visitors who planned to spend a significant amount of time dining or shopping there.

The buses still provide free transportation, but they don’t offer quite the same experience.

The Boats Aren’t Gone for Good

Fortunately, guests shouldn’t have to rely exclusively on buses indefinitely.

The Sassagoula River Cruise suspension is temporary, with service expected to return after the current interruption.

Until that happens, Old Key West guests will have fewer transportation options than they normally receive during their stay.

For anyone visiting during the closure, the adjustment is straightforward: plan on using the bus for trips to Disney Springs.

Guests looking forward to cruising down the Sassagoula River, however, will need to wait until the popular transportation perk returns.
