Frontierland Starts Vanishing as Disney Prepares Major Magic Kingdom Changes

Magic Kingdom is entering one of its most transformative periods in recent memory. Disney has several major projects underway across the park, and one land in particular is experiencing some of the biggest changes.

Frontierland, once defined by its scenic river, rustic boardwalks, and classic Western atmosphere, is rapidly evolving as Disney prepares for the future.

Over the past year, longtime attractions have closed, construction has begun reshaping the landscape, and Disney has started quietly clearing space for new development.

Now, another small but telling change suggests the transformation of Frontierland is moving forward faster than many fans expected.

Several Frontierland Locations Disappear

First reported by Blog Mickey, several Frontierland kiosks have now disappeared from Magic Kingdom’s official digital map.

The removed locations include:

  • Westward Ho

  • A churro kiosk

  • Big Al’s merchandise kiosk

For many guests, these spots were easy to overlook compared to the land’s major attractions. Still, they were familiar pieces of Frontierland’s atmosphere for years.

The kiosks once lined the northern edge of the main walkway, offering snacks and merchandise as guests traveled through the land.

While the structures were still visible on the printed Magic Kingdom park map, their removal from the digital version suggests Disney has permanently cleared the locations as construction work expands nearby.

Clearing Space for Piston Peak National Park

The kiosk removals appear closely tied to the massive expansion project Disney is preparing inside Frontierland.

The company is currently developing Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed land inspired by the national park setting introduced in Pixar’s Cars stories.

This expansion represents one of the most significant additions to Magic Kingdom in years. In order to build the new area, Disney has already closed several major experiences.

Two of the biggest changes involved the removal of:

  • Rivers of America

  • Tom Sawyer Island

For decades, the river served as the visual anchor of Frontierland. Guests could ride the Liberty Square Riverboat or explore Tom Sawyer Island while enjoying one of the most peaceful areas of the park.

With those locations now gone and construction underway, the landscape of Frontierland is shifting dramatically.

Removing nearby kiosks may be part of Disney’s effort to manage space while construction crews continue working throughout the area.

Big Thunder Mountain’s Return Is Coming Soon

Not every Frontierland update involves something disappearing.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed for an extended refurbishment and reimagining project. The attraction is expected to reopen sometime this spring, although Disney has not announced a specific date yet.

The popular roller coaster has long served as Frontierland’s centerpiece. When it returns, guests will likely see refreshed effects and enhancements designed to keep the attraction feeling new while preserving its classic story.

Its reopening should help draw guests back into Frontierland even as other areas of the land remain under construction.

Frontierland Is Entering a New Era

Frontierland has always held a special place inside Magic Kingdom.

From the moment guests walked past the wooden facades and onto the boardwalk paths, the land felt like a step back in time. Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad helped tell a story rooted in exploration and adventure.

But that version of Frontierland is slowly disappearing.

The construction of Piston Peak National Park will introduce a completely different style of storytelling, bringing Pixar’s Cars characters into the heart of Magic Kingdom.

For some fans, the changes are exciting and represent Disney’s commitment to keeping the park fresh. For others, the loss of classic Frontierland elements carries a bit of sadness.

Magic Kingdom’s Landscape Is Changing

The removal of a few kiosks may seem like a small detail, but it tells a bigger story about what’s happening at Magic Kingdom right now.

Disney is reshaping Frontierland piece by piece.

Between the closure of Rivers of America, the removal of Tom Sawyer Island, the refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and the clearing of smaller locations throughout the land, the transformation is already well underway.

And with Piston Peak National Park still ahead, Frontierland’s evolution is far from finished.

Guests visiting Magic Kingdom in the coming years may find that the land they once knew looks very different — a reminder that even the most classic corners of Disney World are never truly frozen in time.
