Florida Man Accused of Attempted Murder in Chilling Arrest Report

By now, everyone knows “Florida Man.” He’s a walking meme, always up to something that makes you laugh and shake your head simultaneously. One week, he’s caught trying to grill burgers on a roof during a lightning storm. The next, he’s getting arrested for smuggling cocaine into Walt Disney World.

But not every “Florida Man” headline comes with a punchline.

This time, the situation turned deadly serious—and one woman is lucky to be alive after what police say was a planned and brutal attack.

A Snap Over a Snapped Line

Douglas Naeher, 60, had been married to his wife for three years when he suggested a fishing trip out on the Gulf of Mexico. The two set out from Anna Maria Island, heading about 33 miles offshore. It seemed like a typical day. But when Naeher’s fishing line broke, something in him reportedly did too.

His wife told authorities that his mood changed immediately—and things spiraled fast.

Left for Dead, Twice

Trying to stay safe, the woman jumped into the water holding a rope tied to the boat, using a pool noodle to stay afloat. Naeher allegedly untied the rope and tried to leave her behind. He circled back once another boat appeared nearby—but not to help her.

Police say he beat her unconscious with his fists and feet, dragged her by the hair, and shoved her overboard again. At one point, he jumped in and attempted to drown her, screaming that he was going to kill her. She survived only by pretending to be dead.

Even that wasn’t the end. After she climbed back onto the boat, Naeher reportedly threw her off again. She clung to a rope tied to the back of the boat with just one leg as he tried to drive away.

Miraculously, she made it back on board again.

Her Bold Escape, His Fast Arrest

Once they got close to shore, she took her chance, jumping from the boat and running straight to the Holmes Beach Police Department. Bruised and battered, she told officers everything. She was hospitalized with a concussion, a swollen eye, and deep bruising.

Naeher fled the area in his pick-up truck but was arrested the next day. He’s now behind bars, charged with attempted first-degree murder and domestic battery.
