Is Disney Scrapping Animal Kingdom’s Latest Attraction? Fans Predict the End

Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom has long been celebrated for its immersive environments and commitment to blending conservation with entertainment. From the awe-inspiring safari in Harambe Wildlife Reserve to the mythical thrills of Expedition Everest, the park continues to enchant guests.

However, recent plans to replace DinoLand U.S.A. with a new Tropical Americas-themed area have sparked intense debate among fans, particularly surrounding the rumored Indiana Jones overlay of DINOSAUR.

In August 2024, Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro announced that DinoLand U.S.A. would be transformed into Tropical Americas, a vibrant new land inspired by the lush landscapes and diverse cultures of Central and South America.

This ambitious project promised two main attractions: an Encanto (2021)-themed experience and an Indiana Jones ride that would take over the existing DINOSAUR track. While many fans were thrilled by the announcement, others have grown skeptical about whether these plans will come to fruition.

The Uncertain Future of Indiana Jones at Animal Kingdom

One major point of contention is the Indiana Jones overlay for DINOSAUR. The idea of replacing the beloved thrill ride has been met with mixed reactions. While some fans are excited to see the adventurous archaeologist make his way to Animal Kingdom, others worry that the franchise lacks the cultural and thematic resonance to fit into a land celebrating the Tropical Americas.

Twitter user @DisneyDan summed up the skepticism:

“They are going to cancel the Indiana Jones overlay of DINOSAUR before this Animal Kingdom refresh is over. Dinorama is cooked for Tropical America, but DINOSAUR isn’t going to go anywhere. Just a hunch.”

Other fans echoed this sentiment, suggesting that Disney should instead reimagine DINOSAUR to align with the new theme without completely overhauling the ride. User @AParkMind proposed:

I agree, If i were disney I would don’t retheme dinosaur and just theme it to fit the tropical america land. Then after encanto and the rest of the land opens see if the better offering cause higher wait times for dinosaur and if not retheme the ride as originally planned

The lukewarm reception of Indiana Jones as a potential centerpiece has also been influenced by the franchise’s recent struggles. The 2023 film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny failed to make a significant impact at the box office, leading some fans to question whether the character remains relevant enough to anchor a major attraction.

User @DarthImpervious suggested exploring lesser-used intellectual properties instead:

It’s a bad idea. I love Indiana Jones but it’s not the IP it used to be. They should use their branding power for a lesser IP that is rewatchable on D+ and invigorate it. I’d love them to turn it into an emporers new groove attraction or a new story with the Atlantis characters

Encanto: A Bright Spot in the Tropical Americas Plan

While the Indiana Jones concept has faced criticism, the proposed Encanto-themed attraction has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm. Fans have praised the idea of bringing the magical Madrigal family to life in a vibrant, immersive setting that aligns beautifully with the Tropical Americas theme.

From Casita’s ever-changing architecture to Mirabel’s heartwarming story, Encanto offers a unique opportunity to create a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience.

Unlike Indiana Jones, Encanto feels like a natural fit for Animal Kingdom’s focus on storytelling and connection to nature. The film’s themes of family, community, and harmony with the environment make it a strong addition to the park, and many fans are eagerly anticipating how Disney Imagineers will bring the world of Encanto to life.

Speculation Grows as DINOSAUR Gets a Reprieve

Adding fuel to the speculation is the news that DINOSAUR will remain operational through 2025. Disney recently restored the Alioramus animatronic, a fan-favorite element that had been removed during refurbishment, further suggesting that the ride isn’t going anywhere soon. This decision has led many to wonder if the Indiana Jones overlay is being reconsidered or even scrapped entirely.

Comparisons have also been drawn to the transformation of Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Despite vocal backlash from fans resistant to change, Disney moved forward with the reimagining, replacing a beloved classic with a new attraction celebrating The Princess and the Frog.

However, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure hasn’t matched the popularity of Splash Mountain, fueling speculation that Disney may take a more cautious approach with DINOSAUR.

As fans continue to debate the future of DINOSAUR and the Tropical Americas retheme, one thing is clear: Disney’s decisions will be closely scrutinized. The park’s transformation represents a significant opportunity to breathe new life into Animal Kingdom, but it also carries the risk of alienating long-time fans who hold fond memories of the original attractions.

Will Disney move forward with Indiana Jones, or will they pivot to a different concept that better aligns with the Tropical Americas theme? For now, only time will tell. Until then, fans can share their thoughts and dreams for Animal Kingdom’s future in the comments below.
