Planning an Epic Universe vacation in early 2027? One attraction will be missing from the lineup for guests visiting during a short stretch of the winter.
Fyre Drill, the interactive water attraction in How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk, is scheduled to temporarily close beginning January 25, 2027. The closure will continue through February 4, meaning guests visiting during those dates will need to plan their day without the attraction.
While the downtime isn’t particularly long, it’s another scheduled closure that visitors may want to know about before booking their Universal Orlando Resort vacation.
It’s also happening at a time of year that makes plenty of sense for this particular attraction.
Epic Universe Is Taking Fyre Drill Offline
Fyre Drill isn’t the biggest thrill ride at Epic Universe, but it fills a unique role in the park’s attraction lineup.
Guests climb aboard boats and use water cannons throughout the experience. Ruffnut and Tuffnut lead the adventure, which revolves around teaching guests how to put out fires in a village where dragons make that skill especially useful.
Riders can spray targets as they move through the attraction, but other boats can also become targets. That interactive element means guests can end the experience considerably wetter than when they started.
During the hottest months of the year, that’s part of the attraction’s appeal.
January and early February can be a different story.
Central Florida can still have warm winter afternoons, but cooler temperatures can make a water ride considerably less attractive. That gives Universal a natural opportunity to complete maintenance without removing Fyre Drill during the summer, when guests are much more likely to use it as an escape from the Florida heat.
Fyre Drill also closed during a similar period previously, making the upcoming refurbishment less surprising.
Another Closure Is Already Scheduled
Fyre Drill isn’t the only Epic Universe experience with planned downtime.
The Untrainable Dragon, also located in How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk, is scheduled to be unavailable from September 15 through September 20, 2026.
The two closures won’t happen at the same time, which is important for anyone worried about a larger shutdown affecting the land.
Instead, Universal appears to be spreading the scheduled downtime across different periods.
That’s something guests will probably see more often as Epic Universe gets older.
The park officially opened in May 2025, and scheduled maintenance is a normal part of operating attractions every day. Even rides that have only been running for a relatively short period need inspections, repairs, adjustments, and other refurbishment work.
What Guests Should Know Before Visiting
For most visitors, the biggest consideration is simply whether their vacation falls between January 25 and February 4.
If it does, don’t count on riding Fyre Drill.
Guests arriving outside that window should still check Universal’s calendar closer to their vacation. Scheduled refurbishment dates can change, while unexpected operational closures can happen at any theme park.
Fortunately, Fyre Drill’s closure isn’t currently scheduled to stretch for months. It’s a relatively brief interruption during a time of year when demand for a water attraction could naturally be lower.
Still, if getting soaked while battling friends and family aboard Fyre Drill is part of your Epic Universe plans, you’ll want to pay close attention to those dates.
For guests visiting between January 25 and February 4, 2027, one piece of How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk will be unavailable.
