Universal Epic Universe Closure Hits ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Fanbase: Will Commence in 48 Days

Epic Universe visitors will temporarily lose one of How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk’s defining experiences this September.
Universal Orlando’s current operating calendar lists The Untrainable Dragon as temporarily closed from September 15 through September 20, 2026. That means no scheduled performances—and no flight over the audience from the production’s enormous Toothless figure—during the six-day window.
The interruption is brief, but it matters for visitors who consider the theatrical production a priority rather than something to catch only after finishing the rides.
Universal Sets a Six-Day Closure at Epic Universe
Universal identifies the dates under the “Temporary Closures” section of its park-hours page. The calendar does not currently explain what work will occur inside the theater.
Some reports have characterized the interruption as a refurbishment, but Universal’s public-facing calendar uses the broader “temporary closure” classification. The company has not announced new scenes, altered effects, or substantial changes to the production.
That distinction matters. A scheduled maintenance window is not evidence that an attraction is experiencing serious problems, nor does six days of downtime point automatically toward an overhaul.
Based on Universal’s listed dates, September 21 would be the earliest expected day for performances to resume. Visitors should still check the Universal Orlando app or park calendar before their trip because operating schedules can change.
This is also not the first planned interruption involving one of Epic Universe’s theatrical productions. Le Cirque Arcanus underwent a temporary ten-day closure in June before returning to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic.
Short maintenance periods are part of operating technically complicated live entertainment. The practical consequence, however, is uncomplicated: guests inside Epic Universe between September 15 and 20 will not be able to see this show.
Toothless Is More Than a Small Stage Effect
The Untrainable Dragon follows Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid, and Gobber as they confront the arrival of a mysterious dragon on Berk. Its combination of performers, music, large puppets, aerial elements, and theatrical effects gives the land something different from its ride-heavy neighbors.
Universal says the Toothless figure that flies over the audience weighs 1,157 pounds and stretches nearly 27 feet across its wings. That sequence delivers the production’s signature image—and explains why maintaining the show involves more than fresh paint and costume repairs.
Inside the Magic followed the development of Universal’s flying dragon technology before Epic Universe opened, when the Florida production was still being prepared for its American debut.
The show’s roots extend beyond Orlando. A related production, titled Untrainable, opened at Universal Beijing Resort. Inside the Magic documented Toothless taking flight in the Beijing production years before the character soared above audiences in Florida.
Universal later adapted the concept for Epic Universe, where it became one of the experiences announced for How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk.
What September Visitors Will Experience Differently
The rest of Isle of Berk is not included in this scheduled closure. Universal has not announced closures for Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, Dragon Racer’s Rally, Fyre Drill, Viking Training Camp, the land’s restaurants, or its character encounters during the same period.
Visitors therefore will not lose access to the land. They will lose one complete category of experience within it.
That difference is especially relevant for families with guests who cannot—or do not want to—ride coasters. The Untrainable Dragon does not function as a consolation prize beside the rides. It is a substantial production built around the characters and emotional language of the films.
The theater also gives visitors a seated, indoor break from walking through the park. September temperatures in Central Florida can remain punishing, so removing an indoor show from an itinerary has a practical consequence beyond missing Toothless.
Guests who cannot move their travel dates should build their Isle of Berk plans around the attractions that remain available. Inside the Magic’s overview of Epic Universe attraction wait times offers a starting point, although same-day waits should always be checked in Universal’s app.
Eligible visitors can also review how Express access applies across Epic Universe, but Express cannot restore a performance when the production itself is dark.
What Universal Has Not Announced
Universal has not identified a malfunction, disclosed the maintenance being completed, or promised that visitors will notice changes afterward. There is presently no evidence that the storyline, flying Toothless sequence, or other production elements are being replaced.
For now, the accurate takeaway is narrower: The Untrainable Dragon is scheduled to remain unavailable for six days.
That is small on Universal’s maintenance calendar but potentially decisive for a family that built its first Epic Universe visit around seeing Toothless fly.
