Elisabeth Finch, a former Grey’s Anatomy writer whose career ended in scandal, has returned to the spotlight for controversial reasons. Finch, once revered for her work on the ABC medical drama, admitted in 2022 to fabricating stories about her life, including a false cancer diagnosis.
Now, her recent wildfire fundraising efforts have ignited outrage, with critics accusing her of leveraging past deceit for personal gain.

A Scandal That Shook Hollywood
Finch’s fall from grace began when her wife exposed her web of lies. The writer, who had spent eight years contributing to Grey’s Anatomy as a writer and producer, claimed she battled a rare form of bone cancer. These fabricated hardships not only influenced her professional work, with storylines inspired by her alleged experiences, but also earned her sympathy and trust from colleagues.
Before an internal investigation could take place, Finch resigned and publicly admitted her deception.
The revelations were shocking. Finch didn’t just lie about cancer; she also falsely claimed to have lost a kidney, had an abortion, and suffered PTSD from personal ties to the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. Her actions led to widespread condemnation and permanent damage to her reputation.
Wildfires and a New Controversy
Los Angeles has recently been ravaged by devastating wildfires, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. With thousands of homes destroyed and over two dozen lives lost, the community has come together to aid those affected.
Finch joined the effort, posting on social media that she had been evacuated and was fundraising to help others in need.

In her post, Finch shared her Venmo information, stating, “This is just me. Boots on the ground. It was challenging enough getting dog food while evacuated and I was at a safe place. So this is for people who have virtually nothing and have pets with basic needs.”
Finch’s fundraising efforts were met with swift criticism. Fellow Grey’s Anatomy producer Jamie Denbo, who was vocal about Finch’s past deception, didn’t mince words in her response.
“This person is a SCAMMER and a LIAR. It is well documented in the @peacock series #AnatomyofLies! Unless you want to send her donations of 69 cents for her ‘cancer treatment’ (she doesn’t have cancer) or perhaps ‘in memory of her late brother’ (he’s alive) or anything else she has lied about (everything) DO NOT DONATE to Elisabeth Finch!!”

Denbo’s scathing remarks reflect the lingering mistrust surrounding Finch. Many questioned whether her intentions were genuine or yet another manipulation.
Finch Defends Her Actions
In response to the criticism, Finch addressed her past mistakes in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. She acknowledged that her history might cast doubt on her current actions but insisted her efforts were sincere.
“I recognize, given my history, people might be skeptical of my fundraising efforts. I’m trying to make amends in as many ways I can, including helping my community — especially during these difficult times. So many organizations are calling for gift cards because they are overwhelmed with physical donations, and I didn’t want peoples’ pet needs to get lost in the shuffle.”
While Finch’s statement emphasized her intent to help, it did little to pacify critics who remain unconvinced of her authenticity.
Ms. Denbo does not think Ms. Finch is trying to make amends, and believes this is another one of her many scams.
“Elisabeth continues to scam, deceive and produce incredible material for comedians like myself to use and mock her relentlessly. I can’t thank her enough! (For just the last thing.) Keep it up, Finch!”
The controversy surrounding her wildfire fundraising raises deeper questions: Can Finch truly redeem herself, or will her past forever overshadow her future? For now, her efforts to assist wildfire victims remain overshadowed by doubt and skepticism.
