Social media has been abuzz in recent days over a photo of three men of comedy who, over the years, have become some of the funniest Hollywood actors in history, simply because of one of the stars’ apparent change in appearance that’s so great, the star is being described by some as unrecognizable.
Do you recognize the beloved Hollywood actor on the far right of the photo?
The photo, which was posted to Instagram by comedian and actor David Spade, has stirred up conversations and concerns over the man standing to Spade’s left, as fans say the actor is nearly unrecognizable in the photo.
The actor standing to the left of David Spade is none other than funny man Jim Carrey, but many Instagram users weren’t immediately sure who he was. Upon reading his name, however, some were surprised, saying they truly did not recognize the Ace Ventura alum in the image.
One user asked, “Is that Jim Carrey or that girl on Tiktok that looks like him? I’m not joking; I really can’t tell.” Another chimed in with, “Jim Carrey looks like that woman who looks like Jim Carrey,” referring to a TikToker whose appearance is very similar to the actor’s.
One of the things that struck fans as different about Carrey was his long hair. The photo of comedians and actors Adam Sandler, David Spade, and Jim Carrey, which was posted online by David Spade on Wednesday, was taken during a celebration of Carrey’s birthday that day–January 17.
Fans who remember watching the hilarious behaviors and strange antics of Carrey in his breakout roles in films like The Mask (1994) and Ace Venture: Pet Detective (1994) might be surprised to learn that Carrey turned 62 years old this week.
“Happy birthday to Jim Carrey, who has made me laugh on and off the field so many times,” wrote Spade in his Instagram post. “Such a cool dude. I rarely bust out the cake emoji, but I will today. 🎂.”

Carrey’s more-than-30-year-long career includes roles in films like The Mask (1994), Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) and its sequel (1995), Dumb and Dumber (1994), Liar Liar (1997), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), Bruce Almighty (2003), Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009), Mr. Popper’s Penguins (2011), and, more recently, Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and its sequel (2022).
But despite a wildly successful career in Hollywood, the hilarious actor took a break from acting, beginning in 2016, before returning in 2020–a decision about which he was asked during a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Carrey revealed that his decision was based on the fact that he had no interest in continuing in the business.
“I just didn’t want to be in the business anymore,” he explained. “I didn’t like what was happening, the corporations taking over and all that.”
Happy belated birthday to Jim Carrey!
