DIY Dog Costume Inspired by Maleficent

What Youโ€™ll Need:

  • HEADPIECE:
  • Black felt
  • Foil
  • Glue
  • Black tissue
  • Small paper cups
  • Scissors
  • Self-adhesive squares
  • Sponge craft brush
  • Hot glue
  • CAPE:
  • Black fabric (We used ยฝ a yard for a medium size dog.)
  • Decorative trim (for collar and length of cape)
  • Black feathers
  • Self-adhesive squares
  • Scissors
  • Silver paint pen
  • Plastic bones
  • Hot glue

How To Make It:

1. Cut a strip of the black felt to accommodate your dogโ€™s head. Be sure to include a point in the center to create the classic Maleficent look. Set aside.

2. Using paper cups and foil, create horns.

3. Cut the black tissue into squares.

4. Gently brush over tissue squares with glue until the foil horns are completely covered in black tissue.  Set aside to completely dry.

5. Add self-adhesive squares to the ends of the black felt to fit your pup comfortably.

6. Once your horns are dry, hot glue the horns to the felt strip, about ยฝ-1 inch apart depending on the size of your pupโ€™s head. Allow to dry.

7. Add a small bone or skull detail to create a finished look.

8. Next youโ€™ll make the no-sew cape. Lay out your black fabric. Using the silver paint pen, draw a cape shape to accommodate the size of your pup, leaving enough room at the top to wrap around your pupโ€™s neck comfortably.

9. Choose a larger-sized black trim to hot glue around the smaller end of the cape to create the collar.

10. Use the self-adhesive squares to make a comfortable neck closure.

11. Finally, we used smaller black trim around the length of the cape to eliminate any possible fraying. Use hot glue to adhere.

Notes: All cutting and hot gluing should be done by an adult. Always supervise your pooch while theyโ€™re wearing their DIY costume.

More About Maleficient

Oh, Maleficent โ€“ the Mistress of All Evil, the queen of dark glam, and possibly the most misunderstood Disney villain ever! From her striking horns to her dramatic green fire powers, she’s the definition of iconic in the memorable Disney film Sleeping Beauty (1959).

An animated character with pale skin, a black horned headpiece, and a purple collar holds a staff with a glowing orb. A black bird perches on the character's shoulder. They appear to be in a grand hall filled with people.

Whether sheโ€™s turning into a fierce dragon or casting that famous sleeping curse on poor Aurora, Maleficent knows how to make an entrance (and steal the show)! But letโ€™s be real โ€“ deep down, we know sheโ€™s just a fairy with some serious trust issues. After all, who wouldnโ€™t be a little miffed about not getting invited to the party of the century?
