Disney’s new residential community in California will begin selling property in less than a year

Disney Parks released a video today from the groundbreaking ceremony for Cotino, Disney’s first-ever Storyliving by Disney community property.

“Today we mark the ground on which Cotino will be built,” a Disney representative said during the ceremony. “Much like the benchmark coins of our country’s national parks, this commemorative medallion is stamped with the coordinates of Cotino, a one-of-a-kind community for all who wish to find us.”

“To new beginnings in Cotino!” the host says as the commemorative geological survey benchmark was placed onto the sand of the Rancho Mirage desert.

In the caption for the video, Disney shares insight into the new Storyliving by Disney location and details about the exciting groundbreaking ceremony in the Coachella Valley.

In an area that once felt the footsteps of Walt Disney himself, executives and officials gathered in Rancho Mirage, California, to celebrate work starting on the first Storyliving by Disney community.

Our story is one of boundless excitement for this project and this is just the beginning. Thomas Mazloum, president of Disney Signature Experiences, and Claire Bilby, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Signature Experiences Emerging Businesses, were joined by City of Rancho Mirage Mayor Charles Townsend and CEO of DMB Development Brent Herrington to celebrate this important first milestone.

Executives and officials shared remarks about the new community before unveiling a storybook sand sculpture to mark the occasion. It was the spirit of renewal and rejuvenation that led Walt and Lillian Disney to establish a retreat in Rancho Mirage. So fittingly, the brilliant mountain-ringed valley will be the first site for a Storyliving by Disney community.

In preparation for the ceremony, a beautiful sand sculpture was created in the shape of a storybook with the words “Your next chapter in a brilliant new setting” carved into the sand.

Disney’s new master-planned community, Cotino, is only the first of the innovative Disney branded community plan which features homes, unique amenities, and recreational activities. There will even be a beached swimming area and hotel.

Though the area is beautiful, the views are scenic, and the heart is Disney, many in the local community are opposed to the new project. Still others have used the Storyliving by Disney community announcements to poke fun at so-called “Disney adults.”

In the video from Disney, President of Disney Signature Experiences Thomas Mazloum announced that the sale of properties at Cotino is expected to begin in early 2023, with the first residents of Cotino expected to begin making the Cotino residential community their homes in early 2024.

About Becky Burkett

I'm an enthusiastic writer who finds joy in random things like cold weather, snow, "I Love Lucy," "The Andy Griffith Show," journals full of blank paper, countdowns to Christmas, the month of December, "Toy Story," "Sleeping Beauty," my 4 kids, my 4 shih tsus, Disney Parks history, Imagineering and visiting the parks. I think Walt Disney is the standard against which genius should be measured. I love to write about Disney Parks, Disney history, all things Imagineering and PIXAR. I adore the colors, story and art direction of Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" (Team Make it Blue!), and "Toy Story" is life (minus "Toy Story 4"). I believe Walt Disney was so much more than an entertainment and theme park tycoon; I believe he was a savant with a vision for life and how it could be if happiness and kindness are strived for. I love Biergarten at EPCOT and 1900 Park Fare at Disney's Grand Floridian. You can find me croonin' with the birdies at the Enchanted Tiki Room, chillin' on the PeopleMover or hangin' with Woody and the gang at Toy Story Land. I'm always looking for Imagineers in the parks, and I'd rather meet Joe Rohde and Tony Baxter than anyone in Hollywood! Hey, if you dream it, you really can do it!
