Love them or hate them, there is no getting around the fact that Disney is going in on its live-action remakes. And despite the fact that live-action remakes have become a point of contention among fans, there is no questioning their success.

In fact, the live-action remakes of The Lion King (2019) and Beauty and the Beast (2017) are some of Disney’s most successful movies of all time, out-earning the original animated films they were based on.

Disney has a lot of live-action remakes coming down the pike, and one of those is the live-action remake of the 1997 film, HerculesHercules was not considered a box-office success, considering it just broke even, but in the nearly 30 years since its release, the film has gained an almost cult-like following.

Disney first announced the Hercules live-action remake in 2020 and said it would be produced by the same pair who produced the live-action Lion King — Jeffrey Silver and Karen Gilchrist. It was also announced that the famed Joe Russo and Anthony Russo would be directing the film.

The Russo brothers are no stranger to the Mouse House, having directed numerous Marvel films. This includes Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Unlike Disney live-action remakes of the past, the Russo brothers said that their Hercules film would not be a near shot-for-shot remake of the animated movie. It will pay homage to the original film, but have a modern twist, including music inspired by TikTok.

It’s been four years since the initial announcement, and we haven’t heard much since. Unfortunately, we now have an update, but it is not one we wanted to hear. According to Comicbook.com, the brothers have shared that the film still does not have a script, despite the promise that one was coming in 2021.

Of course, it’s possible that the reason they’re waiting on a script has to do with the choice of director. Guy Ritchie, who not only has a select group of writers and actors he likes to work with, but who has also been making a ton of movies lately, is set to direct Hercules. It’s hard to argue with him as a solid choice for the movie.

“Waiting on a script” is all fans get out of the interview, which took place at the Sands: International Film Festival in St Andrews, Scotland.

Disney’s live-action Hercules remake is set to be directed by Guy Ritchie, but there are rumors that he might have stepped away. We have no casting news to share, but Danny DeVito has said that he would love to return for the remake. DeVito provided the voice for Phil — the Satyr who trained Hercules — in the original film.

Of course, fans have shared who they would like to see in the film, including Ariana Grande as Meg, and Lizzo and Beyoncé as two of the Muses.

Disney Dining will keep readers updated if and when we hear about progress being made on the new film.
