Disney character meet-and-greets have been a major part of the theme park experience for decades. However, the company is now exploring technology that could change how visitors interact with their favorite characters.
A newly approved patent reveals Disney’s interest in using artificial intelligence to allow costumed characters to speak directly with guests.

While the technology hasn’t been confirmed for Walt Disney World or Disneyland, it could eventually bring a completely different experience to the parks.
Disney Receives Patent for Talking AI Characters
On November 3, 2026, Disney received a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for an artificial intelligence system designed to help costumed characters communicate with visitors.
The company originally filed the patent in May 2024, meaning the idea has been in development on paper for more than two years.
Currently, many Disney characters rely on gestures, movements, and physical comedy to communicate with guests.
Characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Donald Duck generally don’t speak during traditional meet-and-greet experiences.

Disney’s proposed technology could change that.
The system would listen to what visitors say, process their words using artificial intelligence, and create responses that match each character’s personality.
Instead of relying on pre-recorded dialogue, characters could potentially answer questions and participate in conversations as they happen.
How Disney’s New Technology Would Work
According to the patent, microphones would capture a guest’s voice before converting the conversation into text.
An artificial intelligence model would then use that information to generate an appropriate response.
Disney could program the system with specific character personalities, familiar expressions, and recognizable speaking styles.
For example, a heroic character might respond differently from a villain.
Another AI system would transform the generated response into audio using the character’s voice.

However, Disney’s technology wouldn’t rely entirely on artificial intelligence.
A camera inside the costume could monitor the performer’s facial expressions to determine the emotion behind each response.
If the performer smiles, the character could sound happy. A frown might produce a disappointed response, while a smirk could create a more confident tone.
The finished dialogue would play through speakers inside the costume.
Will Disney Bring AI Characters to Its Theme Parks?
Disney has experimented with talking characters before.
Magic Kingdom previously offered a talking Mickey Mouse meet-and-greet at Town Square Theater, although that experience eventually ended.
Today, characters such as Stormtroopers and Kylo Ren use recorded dialogue during interactions at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
The new patent could take those experiences further by allowing characters to generate original responses.

However, Disney hasn’t announced any plans to introduce the system at its theme parks.
The patent also doesn’t identify which characters might use the technology or when it could become available.
For now, traditional character interactions remain unchanged.
Still, Disney’s latest patent shows that the company is exploring a future where meeting Mickey Mouse could involve much more than hugs, photographs, and gestures.
