Disneyland Pulls 1966 Attraction From Operations as Massive Overhaul Begins

Visitors heading to Disneyland this week may notice that a familiar attraction is suddenly off-limits.

Construction walls have appeared around a longtime favorite, blocking access to an experience that has welcomed families for generations.

The timing isn’t ideal for visitors hoping to enjoy everything Disneyland has to offer before the Christmas celebrations begin. However, the closure isn’t the result of an unexpected problem.

Disney has already confirmed what’s happening, and while the attraction won’t welcome visitors for several days, its return will bring a completely different experience.

Disneyland Closes 60-Year-Old Attraction

On October 30, 2026, Disneyland Park officially closed “it’s a small world,” temporarily removing the historic Fantasyland boat ride from operation.

The attraction has been part of Disneyland since May 28, 1966, meaning it celebrated its 60th anniversary earlier this year.

Before arriving in California, Disney originally developed the experience for the 1964 New York World’s Fair. It eventually became a permanent Disneyland attraction and remains a recognizable part of the park.

Over the years, millions of visitors have traveled through its colorful international scenes, listening to familiar music as they pass hundreds of animated figures dressed in elaborate costumes.

Now, however, visitors hoping to board the boats will find construction barriers instead.

Disney has blocked portions of the attraction’s entrance and exit while crews work on the surrounding area.

Although the walls might raise concerns about the ride’s future, Disney isn’t removing the attraction or replacing its classic scenes.

Instead, the company is preparing for a seasonal tradition that requires it to temporarily close the ride.

Construction Walls Block Access as Holiday Work Continues

Disneyland is transforming “it’s a small world” into its annual Christmas version, and preparations were already visible before the attraction officially closed.

Christmas lights began appearing on the attraction’s exterior ahead of the October 30 shutdown.

Additional lighting has also appeared on the dolphin-shaped topiaries near the building.

Meanwhile, construction walls now block access to the regular entrance. Another barrier blocks the exit pathway near the surrounding fence and the “it’s a small world” Toy Shop.

Disney has even installed a curtain inside the merchandise location, separating the shop from the attraction’s exit.

When crews installed the barriers, the surrounding area had not yet received its complete Christmas decorations.

All this work is part of the annual installation of “it’s a small world” Holiday.

The seasonal experience adds festive decorations throughout the ride’s international scenes, incorporating holiday traditions from different cultures.

Christmas music also joins the attraction’s familiar soundtrack, while thousands of colorful lights transform the exterior into a nighttime holiday display.

For visitors who return every Christmas, the seasonal version has become a familiar tradition. However, getting everything ready means temporarily closing the original experience.

Disney Announces Official Reopening Date

Fortunately, Disneyland visitors won’t have to wait much longer for the attraction to return.

Disney has confirmed that “it’s a small world” Holiday will officially reopen on November 13, 2026.

The date coincides with the beginning of Disneyland Resort’s holiday celebrations, giving crews approximately two weeks to complete the transformation.

Once the attraction reopens, families can board the same boats and travel through the familiar scenes, now decorated for Christmas.

The exterior lighting will also help create the park’s festive nighttime atmosphere.

However, anyone visiting Disneyland before November 13 should plan around the closure.

Visitors hoping to experience the traditional version of “it’s a small world” won’t have that opportunity during the refurbishment.

At least Disney has provided a reopening date, giving families time to adjust their plans.

More Christmas Experiences Are Coming to Disneyland

The return of “it’s a small world” Holiday is only part of the resort’s Christmas celebration.

Disneyland’s holiday season officially runs from November 13, 2026, through January 6, 2027.

During that period, Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure will feature seasonal entertainment, decorations, specialty foods, and returning holiday experiences.

At Disneyland Park, Haunted Mansion Holiday will continue its seasonal transformation inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).

Meanwhile, Disney California Adventure will welcome Disney Festival of Holidays, featuring cultural traditions, food, and music.

Cars Land will also receive its familiar Christmas decorations, transforming Radiator Springs for the season.

For now, construction walls remain around “it’s a small world” as Disneyland prepares for the celebrations.

The historic attraction isn’t disappearing permanently, but visitors will need to wait until November 13 to experience its festive return.
