When it comes to Disney attractions and experiences, some just rank higher than all the others and have cult followings. For many, they can’t get enough of rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The rides aren’t the newest, but they are the most popular, and things like “the smell of pirate’s water” take on special meaning. At Disneyland Resort, one of the most recognizable and legendary attractions is the Matterhorn Bobsleds, located in the Fantasyland area of Disneyland Park.
The Matterhorn has been a Disneyland Resort staple since it opened in 1959. The Matterhorn takes Guests on a gorgeous bobsled ride through Matterhorn mountain, but things go off the rails when they encounter the dangerous Yeti. From there, it is a race back to safety before you become a permanent part of Matterhorn legend. Guests can’t get enough of the exciting experience, and wait times for Matterhorn Bobsleds frequently reach over an hour.
Unfortunately, for those headed to Disneyland for a late summer/early fall trip, they will not be able to experience the Matterhorn. The Disneyland Resort website was recently updated and revealed that the Matterhorn would be closing indefinitely on August 8 for refurbishment. The Disneyland website now reads:
Matterhorn bobsleds will be closed for refurbishment starting August 8, 2022. Please check back here for updates.
Here is more information on the Matterhorn Bobsleds from the Disneyland Resort website:
Conquer the Mountain – and a Mythic Monster
Climb into a 6-person bobsled and brace yourself against howling winds as you ascend 80 feet up into an icy cave. Take in the sweeping views at the summit and prepare for a thrilling, high-speed ride.
Swoop in and out of shadowy caves and along jagged rocky ledges. Throttle through snowy chutes and around frozen precipices. Fly across bridges and under waterfalls before splashing down into an alpine lake.
The real peril is not snow or sleet! Stories abound of a growling creature known as the Abominable Snowman—who will do anything and everything to protect his home.
Do you have what it takes to find out if the legends are true?
This is the second time this year that Disney has sidelined the Matterhorn — the Disney Park ride was also shut down for a month in late January. However, when no reopening date is given, that usually means a more extensive refurbishment. Disney Dining will keep readers updated when Disney announces a reopening date for the attraction.
