Disneyland Confirms 71-Year-Old Opening Day Favorite Returns Next Week
A piece of Disneyland history is almost ready to welcome guests again, and visitors won’t have to wait much longer to experience one of Walt Disney’s original attractions.
The beloved ride has been unavailable for several weeks while Disney completes refurbishment work. Although temporary closures are nothing unusual at Disneyland Resort, this one affects an attraction that has entertained families for more than seven decades.
Disney initially left guests without a clear reopening timeline, but an updated schedule now points to its return later this month.
For anyone visiting Disneyland in October, that means another classic experience could soon be available again.
Disneyland Sets October 16 Return for Original Attraction
Mad Tea Party, the popular spinning teacup attraction in Fantasyland, is scheduled to reopen on October 16, 2026.
The ride closed September 14 for refurbishment, temporarily removing one of Disneyland Park’s oldest experiences from its attraction lineup.
According to the Disneyland app, the refurbishment should wrap up on October 15, with operations resuming the following day.
Mad Tea Party originally debuted on July 17, 1955, the same day Disneyland opened its gates.
Inspired by Alice in Wonderland (1951), the attraction allows guests to ride inside colorful teacups while spinning beneath decorative lanterns.
Disney installed construction barriers around the attraction during the closure, but crews gave the walls a themed appearance rather than leaving them completely plain.
The decorations complement Fantasyland’s medieval-inspired buildings and feature colorful designs similar to the lanterns normally displayed above the ride.
Signs around the construction area also inform guests that Mad Tea Party is temporarily unavailable.

Why This Ride Remains Important to Disneyland
Disneyland looks considerably different today than it did when Walt Disney first opened the park in 1955.
Over the years, Disney has introduced new lands, updated existing attractions, and permanently removed several longtime favorites.
However, Mad Tea Party has maintained its familiar identity throughout those changes.
The attraction doesn’t need complicated technology to entertain guests. Instead, riders climb into oversized teacups and decide how quickly they want to spin.
A wheel positioned in the middle of each teacup allows guests to control the teacup’s spin speed.
That simple concept has made the attraction a favorite for families who want to experience something connected to Disneyland’s earliest years.
Its colorful appearance also makes Mad Tea Party one of Fantasyland’s most recognizable features.
While the park continues adding modern experiences, the teacups offer something increasingly rare: a chance to enjoy an attraction that dates back to opening day.

Disneyland Has More Refurbishments on Its Calendar
Mad Tea Party isn’t the only Disneyland attraction affected by maintenance this fall.
Indiana Jones Adventure has remained closed since September 8, and Disney hasn’t announced an official reopening date.
Meanwhile, “it’s a small world” is scheduled to close on October 30 as crews prepare the attraction for its annual holiday transformation.
Disney regularly schedules refurbishments to maintain attractions, improve their appearance, and address mechanical needs.
Longtime Disneyland Park favorites such as Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan’s Flight, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and the Disneyland Railroad also require routine maintenance.
Across the resort, Disney California Adventure occasionally closes attractions for similar work, including seasonal maintenance on Grizzly River Run.
While these closures can frustrate visitors, they help Disney maintain experiences that welcome thousands of guests year-round.
For families planning vacations, checking the Disneyland app remains important because refurbishment schedules can change.

Other Historic Disneyland Attractions Have Disappeared
Although Mad Tea Party is preparing to reopen, several other classic Disneyland experiences never returned after closing.
Splash Mountain permanently closed in May 2023, ending a run that began in 1989.
Disney transformed the former log flume into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which opened in November 2024. The replacement features characters, music, and scenery inspired by The Princess and the Frog (2009).
Other attractions disappeared without being replaced with experiences that recreated their original experiences.
The PeopleMover, which once carried guests above Tomorrowland, closed in 1995. Its elevated track remains visible today.
Disneyland also permanently closed the Skyway in 1994 after decades of transporting visitors between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.

Adventure Thru Inner Space closed in 1985, eventually giving way to Star Tours.
Disney California Adventure experienced a major removal of its own when A Bug’s Land closed in 2018 to make room for Avengers Campus. The former land took inspiration from A Bug’s Life (1998).
These changes show just how much Disneyland Resort has evolved since its earliest decades.
A Disneyland Original Is Almost Back
Mad Tea Party’s return gives guests another opportunity to experience an attraction that Walt Disney welcomed visitors to 71 years ago.
While other classics have disappeared, the spinning teacups have remained part of Fantasyland’s identity.
October 16 is currently listed as the reopening date, although Disney could still adjust its plans.
For now, one of Disneyland’s oldest attractions is getting ready to welcome another generation of riders.
