Disney World Replaces Ending to Beloved Fantasmic! Show at Hollywood Studios
Technical issues don’t usually improve a Disney attraction, but one recent performance of Fantasmic! at Disney’s Hollywood Studios left plenty of guests hoping Disney might keep part of the unexpected change.

A recent showing of the nighttime spectacular concluded without its traditional Steamboat Willie riverboat finale after the vessel appeared to be unavailable. Rather than ending the performance early, Disney finished the show with an alternate curtain call that quickly won over many guests.
Fantasmic! has been one of Walt Disney World’s signature nighttime shows since opening at Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios) in 1998. The production follows Mickey Mouse through a dream filled with Disney heroes, villains, live performers, projections, fountains, pyrotechnics, music, and special effects. After returning in 2022 with refreshed scenes following a lengthy closure, the show has continued to draw large crowds.
Because Fantasmic! depends on extensive backstage coordination involving performers, water effects, lighting, boats, audio, and pyrotechnics, performances are occasionally adjusted due to technical or safety concerns. Disney will sometimes pause a performance while determining whether it can continue, while other shows may be canceled altogether depending on conditions.

Instead, this performance received an alternate ending.
Rather than sailing out aboard the Steamboat Willie riverboat, Mickey Mouse and the full cast gathered together on stage for the show’s closing moments. Although the signature finale was absent, the revised ending gave guests a much closer view of the performers than they typically receive.
A video shared by @makaylaeverafter on Instagram quickly spread across social media, prompting Disney fans to debate whether the alternate finale was actually better than the standard version.
Many commenters praised the closer stage presentation, saying it made the characters easier to see and photograph while creating a more personal ending. Some even suggested Disney should permanently incorporate the stage curtain call into Fantasmic!’s regular finale.

Others felt the opposite. Several fans said the Steamboat Willie riverboat remains an essential part of the production and that the finale loses some of its impact without it. Some also questioned why the boat was unavailable, with speculation ranging from maintenance to other operational issues.
Whether guests preferred the revised curtain call or the classic ending, the unexpected finale created plenty of conversation among Disney fans.
