Disney World Operations Falter: Sudden Shutdown Wave Hits Parks Ahead of Major Summer Launch

Guests arriving at Disney World today are stepping into one of the resort’s biggest summer launch events in years. New entertainment offerings, updated attractions, and long-awaited experiences are finally opening to everyone on May 26, 2026. But just one day before the major rollout, multiple attractions across Walt Disney World suffered lengthy downtime, leaving many visitors uneasy about how the parks will handle the incoming crowds.

That concern only grew because the closures happened across several different parks at once.

Several New Experiences Officially Open Today

Disney has spent months building anticipation for this week.

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets officially launches today after weeks of previews and testing. Guests can now experience the updated coaster featuring Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem without needing any special invitation or preview reservation.

The park is also officially opening the new Walt Disney Studios courtyard area alongside Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, which is expected to draw heavy crowds from families throughout the day.

Animal Kingdom is also seeing one of its biggest additions in years. Bluey’s Wild World officially begins full public operations today after Disney used virtual queue testing during preview periods leading into opening day.

The excitement surrounding these openings has been huge, which is why yesterday’s ride downtime felt especially concerning for many guests already inside the parks.

Haunted Mansion Stayed Offline for Hours

One of the biggest issues happened at Magic Kingdom, where Haunted Mansion remained closed for the first five hours of park operations yesterday.

Guests arriving in the morning found one of the park’s most iconic attractions completely unavailable during a major part of the day.

The situation raised additional concern because the Haunted Mansion had already experienced another unusual closure recently. During that earlier issue, the attraction repeatedly shut down for almost two days, with Disney offering little public explanation.

That history made yesterday’s extended downtime stand out even more.

Haunted Mansion typically handles a large volume of guest traffic daily, especially during peak periods. If the attraction experiences similar downtime again today, nearby sections of Magic Kingdom could become overwhelmed very quickly.

And Haunted Mansion was not the only major attraction dealing with operational issues.

Big Thunder Mountain Continues Struggling

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad also went temporarily offline yesterday morning around 10 a.m.

The attraction has experienced several interruptions since reopening on May 3 after a 16-month closure. Many fans expected the coaster to operate smoothly after such a long refurbishment process, but downtime has continued appearing throughout its first few weeks back in operation.

The most serious incident happened on May 23, when the attraction reportedly remained unavailable for almost the entire day. Guests online described the situation as an “all-out meltdown,” with crowds flooding surrounding attractions throughout Frontierland.

That kind of downtime creates ripple effects throughout the park. When Big Thunder Mountain closes, guests immediately redistribute to nearby attractions, creating longer waits throughout the area.

Seeing the attraction temporarily closed again yesterday did not exactly inspire confidence heading into Disney’s massive summer launch day.

Animal Kingdom Also Lost Ride Capacity

Animal Kingdom faced its own operational challenges yesterday when Kali River Rapids remained down for roughly the first five hours of the day.

That creates extra pressure on a park already operating with fewer attractions due to the Tropical Americas construction project, which is replacing the former DinoLand U.S.A. area.

When Kali River Rapids finally reopened later in the day, guests rushed back toward the attraction almost immediately. Wait times eventually climbed to 90 minutes during the afternoon.

That spike demonstrated how important ride capacity is at Animal Kingdom right now.

Disney Faces a Huge Test Today

Today will likely bring some of the largest crowds Disney has seen so far this summer.

Guests are showing up specifically for opening day experiences, especially Bluey’s Wild World and Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. That means Disney needs attractions operating consistently throughout the day if the resort hopes to manage crowd flow effectively.

If major rides continue experiencing lengthy downtime, frustration could build quickly among guests who planned vacations around these openings.

For now, Disney fans are hoping yesterday’s problems were isolated incidents. With major crowds now arriving across all four parks, Disney will need every attraction possible running at full capacity.
