Disney Officially Revives Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man After 7 Years

Seven years after Tony Stark’s emotional farewell in Avengers: Endgame (2019), Disney has officially brought Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man back.

This isn’t another fan theory or speculation surrounding Marvel’s Multiverse. Downey will actually reprise Tony Stark for two major attractions coming to Disney California Adventure.

The announcement gives Iron Man a new future after years of uncertainty. At the same time, Downey’s return as another major Marvel character is making the situation considerably more interesting.

Iron Man Is Officially Returning

Tony Stark became the foundation of the MCU when Iron Man (2008) arrived in theaters.

Downey continued playing the character across the franchise before Stark ultimately sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Tony used the Infinity Stones to stop Thanos, knowing the power would kill him.

For the next seven years, that remained the ending of Downey’s Iron Man story.

Then Disney made a surprising announcement at D23 in August 2026.

Downey will return as Tony Stark for Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab at Disney California Adventure. Both attractions are expected to open in 2028.

Avengers Infinity Defense will feature several familiar MCU actors, including Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie. Guests will travel across the Multiverse while joining Marvel heroes in a fight against King Thanos.

Downey will once again suit up as Iron Man.

Stark Flight Lab will also feature Downey as Tony, placing the character at the center of an attraction built around his technology.

Robert Downey Jr. Has Another Marvel Role

Disney bringing Downey back as Iron Man comes at an unusual time.

Marvel Studios already announced him as Victor von Doom for Avengers: Doomsday (2026).

That casting immediately raised questions about whether Marvel plans to connect Doom to Tony Stark somehow. New material in Avengers: Endgame Encore (2026) has given fans even more reason to wonder.

The new footage connects imagery of Doom forging his mask with the familiar hammering sound associated with Tony creating his original Iron Man armor.

Fans have naturally questioned whether Doom could be a Tony Stark variant or have another connection to him.

Co-director Anthony Russo recently addressed that possibility without revealing Marvel’s answer. Russo acknowledged the curiosity surrounding Downey’s casting but emphasized that the filmmakers are committed to Downey playing Victor von Doom.

Marvel has not confirmed Doom is a Stark variant, nor has Disney announced Tony Stark’s return to MCU movies.

That makes Downey’s situation particularly unusual.

Seven years after Avengers: Endgame (2019), Disney has officially revived his Iron Man for its theme parks. Meanwhile, Downey is returning to theaters as one of Marvel’s biggest villains.

Iron Man is back. The question now is just how far Disney and Marvel intend to take his return.
