Disney Officially Revives Patriotism at the Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney World Resort is getting into the patriotic spirit ahead of the Memorial Day and July 4 holidays. This week, red, white, and blue decorations appeared overnight across the Magic Kingdom.

Walt Disney was deeply patriotic; he created the Main Street, U.S.A., area as a tribute to the Americana of his childhood. The Central Florida Disney parks have stayed true to their founder’s patriotism, with areas like Liberty Square in Magic Kingdom Park (including the Hall of Presidents) and the American Adventure World Showcase Pavilion at EPCOT. The Magic Kingdom holds a nightly Flag Retreat ceremony in Town Square, inviting a veteran to help retire the American Flag for the evening.

Beyond the patriotism already ingrained in Magic Kingdom Park, the Fourth of July is a big deal at Walt Disney World Resort. The only days that the Magic Kingdom offers its legendary 360-degree fireworks are Independence Day and New Year’s Eve, lighting up the entire sky around Cinderella Castle. The original Central Florida Disney park often reaches capacity, with guests waiting hours for the perfect firework-viewing spot.

With just over a month to go, the Magic Kingdom is already gearing up for an unforgettable Fourth of July. On Wednesday, WDWNT reported that red, white, and blue bunting has appeared around Main Street, U.S.A. Windows, balconies, railings, and rooftops on the firehouse, City Hall, the Town Square Theater, Main Street Train Station, and the car barn have been adorned with patriotic decorations. The bunting continues down Main Street, U.S.A., hanging from parts of The Emporium, the Main Street Confectionery, the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor, and Casey’s Corner.

Similar decorations have also appeared on the Liberty Square Riverboat in Liberty Square–likely one of the last times this 52-year-old Magic Kingdom Park icon will celebrate July 4. The Liberty Belle, much of the Rivers of America, and Tom Sawyer Island will close sometime in the near future to make way for two new Cars (2006) attractions in Frontierland.
