Disney Officially Confirms End of Popular MCU Series After Two Years
Few Marvel projects have had to fight as hard for their identity as Daredevil: Born Again. The series was dismantled mid-production, rebuilt around the legacy of Netflix’s Daredevil, and eventually delivered two seasons on Disney+. It is now preparing for its final bow.

The upcoming third season will be the show’s last, and it will reach audiences without the showrunner who led its turnaround. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel declined to renew Dario Scardapane’s contract about two months after Season 3 finished filming, even though the season is still in post-production. Who will see it across the finish line has not been made clear.
A Different Daredevil at the Start
To understand why this ending carries weight, it helps to remember where the series began.
Cox returning as Matt Murdock and D’Onofrio stepping back into the role of Wilson Fisk were the headline attractions when Born Again was first announced. Behind the scenes, though, the show taking shape was reportedly a departure from what fans expected. Marvel had ordered 18 episodes under head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord, and that version reportedly leaned toward procedural storytelling rather than picking up the threads left by Netflix’s Daredevil.
Production was already underway when Marvel began to reconsider. The 2023 Hollywood strikes offered a pause, and a review of the existing footage led to Corman and Ord’s exit. In their place came Scardapane, a writer and producer who had previously worked on Netflix’s The Punisher.

Rebuilding Hell’s Kitchen
Under Scardapane, the show was reshaped from the ground up. Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead joined; the story was substantially rewritten, and new material was filmed, including a replacement pilot. Scardapane has described that process in detail: his team reworked numerous storylines, shot multiple new episodes, and staged additional production to weave the new footage into what was already complete.
The reset also restored the people who made the Netflix series resonate. Deborah Ann Woll came back as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle. Bernthal’s return was especially telling. He had expressed doubts about the earlier take on the character, later explaining that it did not feel like the Frank Castle he wanted to portray. The revamp gave him a stronger voice in shaping the role, which ultimately brought him back.
Even Vanessa Fisk came home. Ayelet Zurer returned to the part after it had initially been recast, a clear sign that Marvel now intended Born Again to continue the Netflix story rather than start over.
Not every idea made the transition. Tom Hiddleston had reportedly been lined up to direct an episode of the original version, but that plan disappeared with the restructuring.
Two Seasons, Then a Surprise
The rebuilt series premiered on Disney+ in 2025, pairing Cox and D’Onofrio once again and reestablishing the connection to Netflix’s Daredevil. Season 2 arrived in 2026, expanding the world and introducing more recognizable Marvel characters.

At one stage, the series was expected to become an annual fixture for Marvel, which is part of why its conclusion comes as a surprise.
Season 3 has finished filming, and The Hollywood Reporter says post-production is nearing completion, though Marvel has not named who will oversee the remaining work. The final season must follow a Season 2 that left Matt Murdock’s circumstances dramatically altered, clearing the way for one last showdown with Fisk.
Not Necessarily Goodbye
For all the finality surrounding the series, its central figures may not be going anywhere. Marvel has not suggested that ending Born Again means retiring Daredevil from the MCU. Cox’s Matt Murdock has already turned up outside the series, and D’Onofrio’s Kingpin has grown into a key player in Marvel’s street-level corner of the universe.
That leaves the door open as the studio continues building out its wider slate. The show may be closing, but its characters could still have roles to play elsewhere.

What remains certain is that Daredevil: Born Again will end in 2027 with Season 3, capping a journey that began as an 18-episode reboot, survived a near-total creative reset, and found its way back to the Netflix series that first made the character a fan favorite.
