Disney Greenlights Massive Tower of Terror Transformation After Hollywood Studios Destruction
Walt Disney World has no shortage of construction projects these days, with crews spread across multiple parks working on expansions, upgrades, and routine maintenance. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, one of the resort’s most recognizable attractions is now receiving that same attention. While the experience itself remains unchanged for guests, Disney is carrying out exterior repairs and maintenance to help preserve the attraction’s signature look.
Visitors can still ride The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror without interruption, but anyone walking through Sunset Boulevard will likely notice that work continues around parts of the building. The latest additions make it clear that Disney’s refurbishment is progressing.
A Classic That Still Draws Crowds
Tower of Terror has been a fixture at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for more than three decades, and its popularity hasn’t faded. Even as newer attractions have opened across Walt Disney World, the haunted Hollywood Tower Hotel continues to attract guests seeking both thrills and immersive storytelling.
The attraction stands out because it offers much more than a drop ride. Long before the elevator begins its journey, guests walk through a dusty hotel filled with eerie lighting, abandoned furniture, and mysterious details that create an unforgettable atmosphere.
Its randomized drop sequence also encourages repeat rides. No two experiences feel the same, giving even longtime fans another reason to return. Combined with its towering facade overlooking Sunset Boulevard, Tower of Terror has become one of the defining symbols of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

More Exterior Work Becomes Visible
Disney first began refurbishment work around the attraction’s exterior queue in early May. As the project continued, guests noticed several themed elements temporarily disappear while protective coverings were added around sections of the building.
Decorative flags near the gift shop exit were removed, and scrim soon covered portions of the hotel’s facade. Those coverings remain in place, but the biggest visual change has arrived with the installation of scaffolding on the building’s right side above the gift shop.
Despite the obvious construction equipment, Disney has kept guest pathways open throughout the project. Visitors can continue walking along Sunset Boulevard as usual, and neither the attraction nor the gift shop has been forced to close.

Permit Offers Clues About the Project
Disney previously filed a construction permit for the Tower of Terror. The filing provides another clue about the work happening around the attraction.
The permit names MLC Theming as the project’s contractor. Disney hasn’t publicly outlined the full scope of the refurbishment. However, the filing suggests crews could refresh exterior paint and restore themed architectural details. They could also update areas weathered by years of Florida sun and rain.
Disney regularly completes this type of maintenance on heavily themed attractions. The Hollywood Tower Hotel is supposed to look abandoned and worn. Crews carefully maintain that appearance. Every weathered surface and faded detail must look intentional, not neglected.

Disney Is Addressing Smaller Repairs Too
Along with the larger refurbishment, Disney is addressing a smaller maintenance issue outside the attraction.
Guests have spotted stanchions blocking part of an archway outside the Tower of Terror gift shop, where damage has appeared in the tile flooring. While the affected section is relatively minor, Disney has closed the area until repairs are completed.
The flooring issue doesn’t interfere with attraction operations or shopping inside the gift shop. Instead, it appears Disney is using the current refurbishment to address several maintenance needs at once, reducing the need for future construction in the same location.
Guests Can Still Experience Every Drop
One of the biggest benefits of the project is that visitors don’t have to postpone riding the Tower of Terror.
Unlike larger refurbishments that require lengthy closures, Disney has kept the attraction running while crews work outside. Aside from seeing scaffolding and construction materials on parts of the building, guests can enjoy the attraction as much as they always have.
That approach allows Disney to preserve one of Hollywood Studios’ most recognizable landmarks without significantly affecting the guest experience.

Preserving a Disney ClassicThe
Tower of Terror has remained one of Disney’s signature attractions for more than 30 years. Projects like this help ensure it stays that way. The current refurbishment doesn’t appear to include major interior changes. Instead, Disney is investing in the exterior to keep the Hollywood Tower Hotel looking its best.
Scaffolding is now in place, and Disney has already filed a construction permit. Crews are also repairing both the facade and the damaged flooring near the gift shop. Refurbishment continues at a steady pace. Best of all, the attraction remains open. Guests can still enjoy one of Disney’s most enduring thrill rides while crews preserve its iconic appearance.
