Disney Gambles Big with Smugglers Run Revamp Amid Slumping Wait Times
Big changes are on the horizon for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and if you’ve been skipping Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run during your last few visits… you might want to change course. Disney has just announced a huge update to the ride, and it’s arriving at both Disneyland and Disney World on May 22, 2026.
Here’s everything we know about this exciting new experience—and why this refresh might bring a new wave of excitement to Galaxy’s Edge.
Smugglers Run Is Getting a Brand-New Story

The current version of the attraction—which puts you on a cargo run for Hondo Ohnaka—is being replaced with a brand-new storyline featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu. In this fresh adventure, Hondo recruits you once again, this time for a dangerous bounty hunt to uncover a shady deal between ex-Imperials and a band of pirates on Tatooine.
You’ll join forces with Din Djarin (aka Mando), with Grogu right by his side.
And if you’re wondering whether this storyline ties into the Mandalorian and Grogu film hitting theaters on the same day—Disney says no. This new mission exists completely separate from the upcoming movie, so there’s no homework required.
Reporter Scott Gustin shared the recent news, as well as new concept art, “NEW: Starting on May 22, 2026, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run will introduce a new storyline featuring Mando and Grogu – and guests will be in control. After taking off from Batuu and visiting Tatooine, the crew will CHOOSE their next destination: Bespin, Endor, or Coruscant.”

New Locations Mean Fresh Missions Every Time
One of the biggest upgrades? You get to choose your destination.
Before takeoff, your crew will set a course for one of several Star Wars locations, including:
-
Bespin – the cloud-covered city above a gas giant
-
The Wreckage of the Second Death Star – floating above Endor
-
Coruscant – the bustling city-covered capital planet
With multiple paths and stories to follow, each ride will feel more unique—and more exciting—than ever before.
Engineers Get a Special Role With Grogu
If you’ve ever sat in the engineer seat and felt like you were missing out… not anymore. The updated attraction now gives engineers the unique ability to interact with Grogu during the mission. Your in-ride actions can trigger different responses and story beats with the character, bringing an added layer of personalization and charm to the experience.
It’s a clever move that makes every seat in the cockpit feel just a little more special.
Created With the Tech Behind The Mandalorian
This isn’t just a storytelling update—Disney is rebuilding the visual experience too.
The new version of Smugglers Run is being powered by Unreal Engine 5, the same cutting-edge game engine used in The Mandalorian on Disney+. Walt Disney Imagineering collaborated with Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) and Epic Games to deliver these visuals, which respond dynamically to how you fly, fight, and navigate the mission.
Expect ultra-realistic destinations, seamless motion, and cinematic-quality storytelling—right from your cockpit.
A Smart Refresh for Galaxy’s Edge
Smugglers Run was once the headline attraction for Galaxy’s Edge… until Rise of the Resistance came along. With that ride drawing the bigger crowds and longer lines, Smugglers Run has seen consistently lower wait times, especially during peak seasons.
This update feels like a strategic way to bring fans back into the Falcon—and balance the energy between the two major attractions in Batuu. With more choices, character-driven stories, and the chance to fly through Coruscant? It’s likely to see a big boost in popularity.
The new version of Smugglers Run opens at Disneyland and Walt Disney World on May 22, 2026—the same day The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters. Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or just someone looking for a more interactive Disney ride, this might be your perfect excuse to visit Galaxy’s Edge again.
And when you’re done piloting the Falcon? Don’t worry—we’ll let you know which milk goes best with victory.
