Disney Cruise Line Limits Door Decorations in Response to Over-The-Top Passengers
An unofficial Disney Cruise Line tradition is getting reined in, and based on the reaction from the cruising community, most passengers are perfectly fine with that.
The New Rules, Effective June 3

Disney Cruise Line updated its official website on Thursday with new policies governing how guests can decorate their stateroom doors. The updated guidelines read:
- Please avoid using tape and other adhesives, including gel adhesives, to affix items to your stateroom door, as this can damage the door’s finish.
- Using over-the-door hanging organizers is prohibited, as they may cause scratches or other damage to stateroom doors and trim.
- Items of value should not be used to decorate your stateroom door. Disney Cruise Line is not responsible for damage to or loss of these items.
- As a courtesy to other Guests, sound or video elements should not be used.
- Decorations should only be placed on doors and are not permitted on corridor walls or ceilings.
The policy takes effect on sailings beginning June 3, 2026. Guests who violate the guidelines and cause damage to stateroom doors or surrounding areas will be fined $100 per incident. Guests sailing in Concierge staterooms aboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy cannot decorate at all, as those stateroom doors are wooden.

One popular tradition that the new policy doesn’t explicitly address is the fish extender — the baskets and decorative holders that guests hang over the fish-shaped room number signs to exchange gifts with fellow cruisers. Provided fish extenders are secured without damaging adhesives and don’t obstruct cast member operations in the hallway, guests appear to be in the clear to continue using them.
Why It Came to This
The new rules arrive as a direct response to a decorating culture that gradually escalated well beyond the simple personalized magnet that started it all. In recent years, some guests have transformed their stateroom entrances into elaborate installations, complete with gallery walls of family photos, motorized elements, lighting, sound, and decorations spreading from the door onto nearby corridor walls and ceilings.

The Reddit community reacted to the news with near-universal approval.
“Love it,” u/unreliable_ibex commented. “We still get to decorate doors and no one can take over the hallway.”
“This is great for people with mobility devices,” u/snarkprovider replied. “Having things on the walls displaces the stateroom attendant carts and takes space out of the hallway for them to pass. Now I hope they think about limits to how far items can extend from doors, lights and motorized elements.”

Several commenters backed up their support with photos from recent sailings showing just how far some guests had taken the tradition. From u/disappointedCoati:
People go all out on the Merrytime cruises for sure.
