Disney Confirms Jungle Cruise Closure Amid Speculation Over Park’s Future

Another classic Disney attraction is preparing for an extended shutdown.

Jungle Cruise has been part of Disney’s theme park lineup since Disneyland Park opened in 1955. The attraction takes guests on a boat tour through elaborate jungle environments, encountering animatronic wildlife while Cast Members deliver a steady stream of jokes.

The original ride eventually expanded to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, and Hong Kong Disneyland. Although each version differs, all four retain the original premise of a guided riverboat expedition.

Over the years, Disney has repeatedly updated the attraction, introducing new scenes, technology, and storylines. Now, one version is preparing to close as speculation continues about a possible overhaul of its home park.

Disney Confirms Extended Jungle Cruise Closure

Tokyo Disney Resort has confirmed that Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions will close at Tokyo Disneyland on January 6, 2027.

The attraction will remain unavailable through March 31, 2027, with operations expected to resume in April. Disney has not disclosed what work will take place during the nearly three-month refurbishment.

Jungle Cruise originally opened at Tokyo Disneyland in April 1983. Its biggest transformation came in September 2014, when it reopened as Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions following a major renovation.

The updated experience introduced new music, lighting, and special effects, alongside an enhanced nighttime experience. Today, guests embark on a 10-minute expedition through Adventureland, encountering elephants, crocodiles, lions, and other animals.

Jungle Cruise isn’t the only classic attraction scheduled to close in early 2027.

Splash Mountain will shut down from January 7 through February 4, while Haunted Mansion will close from January 8 through February 4 to remove its holiday overlay.

However, Jungle Cruise’s significantly longer refurbishment is attracting attention amid speculation that the attraction could eventually disappear altogether.

Jungle Cruise’s Long-Term Future Remains Uncertain

In April 2025, Tokyo Disney Resort operator Oriental Land Company unveiled its 2035 Long-Term Management Strategy, outlining potential major changes to Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea in an effort to attract more international guests.

The company released concept artwork depicting a dramatically redesigned Adventureland, with several longstanding attractions apparently missing.

These included Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions, Western River Railroad, Swiss Family Treehouse, and the Enchanted Tiki Room.

In their place, the artwork suggested new attractions inspired by Disney and Pixar films, including Up (2009), The Incredibles (2004), and Moana (2016).

An Up-themed development resembling Paradise Falls appeared to occupy land currently used by Jungle Cruise and Western River Railroad. Elsewhere, an apparent Incredibles roller coaster and Moana-inspired attraction appeared in other parts of Adventureland.

Crucially, these were preliminary concepts rather than confirmed projects. Oriental Land Company has not announced plans to permanently close any of the affected attractions.

However, speculation intensified in April 2026 when Disney announced the permanent closure of Aquatopia at Tokyo DisneySea.

The attraction, which had operated since the park opened in 2001, welcomed its final guests on September 14, 2026.

Notably, Aquatopia was also absent from the company’s 2025 concept artwork, which depicted a redesigned version of Tokyo DisneySea’s Port Discovery.

Its closure prompted Japanese media outlets to question whether Jungle Cruise and Western River Railroad could eventually face the same fate.

Further speculation followed a special Jungle Cruise experience that ran from July 2 through September 14, 2026. The promotion featured modified expeditions and commemorative stickers, although Disney never described it as a farewell.

Other Adventureland attractions have also experienced closures. Swiss Family Treehouse has remained shuttered since April 2022, while the Enchanted Tiki Room underwent a month-long refurbishment beginning September 24, 2026.

Meanwhile, Tokyo Disneyland is already undergoing significant changes elsewhere. A new Space Mountain is scheduled to open in 2027, while a Wreck-It Ralph (2012) attraction will replace Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters in Tomorrowland.

For now, however, Jungle Cruise’s January shutdown remains a scheduled refurbishment rather than a permanent closure. Disney has not confirmed whether the attraction will be affected by any future Adventureland redevelopment.
