Disney Cast Member’s Tragic Death Leads to Harsh Sentencing for Drunk Driver

The Disney theme parks are more than just attractions and rides—they are vibrant places where the dedication of cast members creates an atmosphere of magic. These cast members are at the heart of the park experience, ensuring that each guest has an unforgettable time. They work tirelessly behind the scenes, helping to make memories, creating moments of joy, and transforming every corner of the park into something special.

When tragedy strikes and a cast member’s life is cut short, the loss is deeply felt, not only by their family and friends but by the entire Disney community.

Nearly three years ago, the Disney family suffered a heartbreaking loss when 19-year-old Hannah Jacks, a beloved performer at Disneyland, was tragically killed alongside her father in a senseless drunk driving crash. This incident, which took place in Moreno Valley, sent shockwaves through the community. And now, justice has been served, though it will never fully erase the pain left behind by this tragic event.

On November 13, 2022, Hannah Jacks and her father, Corporal Daniel Jacks Jr., were struck by a drunk driver while driving through Moreno Valley, roughly an hour away from Anaheim. According to police reports, Scott Bales, the driver responsible for the crash, crossed the center line and collided head-on into the Jacks family car, killing both Hannah and her father instantly.

While Mr. Bales survived the crash, he was found to have a blood alcohol level of .102—well above California’s legal limit of .08.

Hannah was a recognizable figure at Disneyland Resort, captivating audiences as a skilled dancer in the beloved Christmas Fantasy Parade. Outside the magic of the park, she shared her passion for dance as a treasured teacher at The Dancer’s Studio in Hemet, California.

The loss of both father and daughter devastated their family, leaving Denay Jacks to raise their son, Brent, on her own. Her words during the court proceedings highlight the depth of the family’s grief, and the sense of finality they hoped for in order to bring closure.

After three long years, Scott Bales finally pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and three counts of driving under the influence, causing great bodily injury. The judge sentenced him to two consecutive 15-year prison terms. For the other counts, he will serve his sentences concurrently, leading to a total of 30 years in prison.

Although he will be eligible for parole, the length of his sentence ensures that he will remain behind bars for many years to come.

“It was very hard to look at (Bales). I don’t believe he shows remorse. He turned around at the end and said he was sorry, but that doesn’t mean anything,” said Denay Jacks in her victim impact statement. “We needed the finality of him being put away, not on the streets where he could do this to someone else. Because it was his fifth time, so it’s not an accident; his fifth time being caught with a DUI, and I was ready for it all to be done.”

The sentencing has provided some relief to the Jacks family, though nothing can replace the loss of Hannah and her father. The case highlighted not just the deadly consequences of drunk driving, but also the repeated recklessness of the driver, who had previously been convicted four times for driving under the influence.

Scott Bales will serve his sentences consecutively, meaning that after his 15-year sentence for killing Daniel Jacks, he will begin his second sentence for causing Hannah’s death. The reports do not specify when Bales would be eligible for parole, but this sentencing ensures that he will spend a substantial portion of his life in prison.

We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Hannah and Daniel. While their hearts may never fully heal, we hope that this ruling brings some closure to this difficult and devastating chapter.
