Disney Boat Begins Billowing “Significant” Smoke, Guests Evacuated

A routine Disney ride took an unexpected turn last weekend.

Disney’s boat attractions are typically among the more leisurely experiences at its theme parks. From Jungle Cruise to “it’s a small world,” these rides have transported millions of guests through elaborate scenes inspired by everything from classic animated films to far-flung expeditions.

However, even these slower attractions occasionally experience unexpected interruptions. In July 2026, a guest’s portable phone charger caught fire aboard Magic Kingdom’s “it’s a small world,” prompting an evacuation and temporary closure.

Two months later, fire alarms sounded inside Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean, interrupting the attraction and forcing guests to evacuate the adjoining Blue Bayou restaurant.

Now, another Disney boat ride has been temporarily shut down following an incident that left passengers surrounded by thick smoke and prompted an evacuation of the attraction.

Guests Report Loud Noise Before Smoke Fills Disney Boat

The latest incident occurred at approximately noon on Sunday (October 25) aboard Voyage to the Crystal Grotto at Shanghai Disneyland.

According to local news outlets, the boat had only recently departed its loading area when passengers heard a sudden, unusual noise.

Some initially believed the sound was part of the attraction’s special effects. However, smoke soon began appearing around the vessel, reportedly growing thicker as the journey continued.

Passengers also described an unpleasant, pungent odor accompanying the smoke.

Video footage shared on Chinese social media showed a boat carrying several guests, including children, surrounded by clouds of white smoke. Other footage captured the attraction’s loading area as employees directed visitors away from the scene.

Disney Cast Members brought the affected boat back to shore, where passengers were helped off the vessel. Guests waiting in the attraction’s queue were also instructed to leave, and Voyage to the Crystal Grotto temporarily suspended operations.

The footage quickly attracted attention online, with some visitors fearing that a fire had broken out aboard the Disney boat ride.

Voyage to the Crystal Grotto has operated since Shanghai Disneyland opened on June 16, 2016. Located in Fantasyland, the attraction takes guests through a series of scenes inspired by Disney films, including Tangled (2010), Mulan (1998), and Beauty and the Beast (1991).

The roughly 20-minute boat ride features elaborate sculptures, fountains, music, and lighting effects. Unlike most Disney boat attractions, its journey concludes beneath a castle, with guests entering a hidden underground chamber filled with illuminated crystals.

Disney classifies the attraction as a slow ride suitable for guests of all ages, with no minimum height requirement.

Disney Confirms What Caused the Evacuation

Despite initial concerns, Disney subsequently confirmed that no fire had occurred aboard Voyage to the Crystal Grotto.

A Shanghai Disneyland representative explained that the attraction’s fire protection system had been accidentally activated, necessitating the evacuation of guests.

No injuries were reported, and the park apologized for the disruption.

The attraction resumed operations later that afternoon. According to additional local reporting, the ride was operating again by approximately 4:20 p.m. local time.

Affected guests also reportedly received a complimentary Disney Premier Access pass valid for an attraction of their choice. Shanghai Disneyland’s Premier Access system offers expedited entry to participating rides, much like Lightning Lane at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort.

Disney has not publicly explained what caused the fire protection system to activate unexpectedly.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first unusual incident involving Voyage to the Crystal Grotto. In June 2025, footage emerged of a Rapunzel-themed boat submerged in the attraction’s waterway.

That vessel, however, was a decorative element positioned near Enchanted Storybook Castle rather than one of the boats used to transport guests.

Other Disney water attractions have experienced more serious problems. In September 2026, guests riding Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise became stranded shortly after leaving the loading dock.

Employees attempted to tow the stranded vessel, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Passengers eventually transferred to another boat before continuing their journey.

In February 2023, a group of Disneyland guests spent approximately an hour aboard a Pirates of the Caribbean boat that had begun taking on water. Firefighters eventually assisted with the evacuation using a temporary walkway, with footage later circulating widely on TikTok.

A similar incident unfolded at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in February 2020 when a Jungle Cruise boat partially sank with passengers onboard.

Photos showed guests standing on seats to avoid the rising water. The Reedy Creek Fire Department responded, and everyone was evacuated safely, with no reported injuries.

Unlike those incidents, Sunday’s evacuation did not involve a sinking or stranded boat. Disney’s confirmation that no fire occurred also ruled out the possibility that initially concerned some visitors watching the smoke-filled attraction.
