Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a popular attraction at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. This thrilling roller coaster takes guests on a wild adventure through the mining town of Tumbleweed in the American Southwest. The attraction is set in the “Big Thunder Mining Company,” known for its rich deposits of gold.
The story behind Big Thunder Mountain revolves around the legend of a cursed mine. According to the rumored lore widely accepted among Disney fans, a supernatural force known as the “Thunderbird” protects the mountain and causes the mine to come alive with rumbling thunder and flashing lights. Guests board a mine train and journey through the treacherous twists and turns of the mountain, encountering thrilling drops, tight curves, and even a dynamic dark tunnel.

The ride is incredibly popular at Walt Disney World, where it calls Magic Kingdom home. One of a few roller coasters you’ll find in the Disney Park, playing sister to Space Mountain, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and TRON Lightcycle/Run, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a fast-paced, exciting time for the whole family, one that you’d likely want to use a lightning lane for.
Big Thunder Mountain to Close
However, although not closely for good, like its neighbor, the beloved Splash Mountain ride at Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain will close its gates in the middle of January 2024, for some much need tender, love, and care.

Beginning January 16, the ride will face an assumed closure, based on calendar dates showing it as unavailable on Walt Disney World’s website.
Ride information is not available beginning January 16, through the 20th, with an eventual (and assumed) reopening back on the 21st of January.
As the attraction remains a popular must-do for many, and has gained popularity in many Disney Parks, including Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris, it would be a shame to see it go the way of Splash Mountain. Luckily for guests, it isn’t, however; our favorite ride in the wilderness is only closing for a short period of time.
What Makes Big Thunder Mountain So Fun
The attention to detail in the design of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is exceptional. The Imagineers at Walt Disney Imagineering have created an immersive environment, reminiscent of the Wild West, with stunning rockwork, desert landscapes, and buildings that transport guests back in time. From the moment you step into the queue, you are transported to the dusty frontier town of Tumbleweed, complete with authentic mining artifacts and signage.
As the train races through the mountain, guests are treated to breathtaking views of the Magic Kingdom Park. The coaster’s track weaves in and out of the mountain, providing exhilarating moments of weightlessness and thrilling speed. The mixture of excitement and scenic beauty makes Big Thunder Mountain a must-visit attraction for both thrill-seekers and Disney enthusiasts alike.
The overall experience of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is enhanced by the attention to storytelling. Throughout the ride, guests are immersed in the narrative of the cursed mine and the supernatural forces at play. From the spirited audio-animatronic figures to the atmospheric effects, every element adds to the captivating storyline.

Magic Kingdom is Home to More Thrills Than You Might Think
You’ll find Big Thunder Mountain Railroad tucked away far back into Frontierland at Disney World. Although not as exciting as other Disney roller coaster rides like Expedition Everest over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the fun attraction offers up a typical amusement park journey, but with beautiful sights of surrounding park lands like Tom Sawyer’s Island, Cinderella Castle, and more.
As well, rumors suggest that the explosive sound effect may be coming back as part of the refurbishment, adding a lot more excitement to rainbow ridge.
One particular tip we like to give guests regarding the attraction is to try and ride during fireworks for amazing views of the castle and nighttime spectacular “Happily Ever After.” We promise, you won’t be disappointed.
I hope they fix the track. It’s so rough now, it is no longer the fun ride it once was. I used to love this ride!
