Tower of Terror has always been one of the biggest attractions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but lately, many guests have noticed something unusual. Instead of operating at full capacity, the attraction has frequently been running with only one drop shaft available, creating much longer waits than visitors might expect.
A recent Reddit discussion brought renewed attention to the issue after one guest reported arriving to find a 95-minute standby wait while only a single drop shaft appeared to be operating. The guest questioned whether Disney had begun a refurbishment or if the attraction was simply experiencing unexpected downtime.

Several frequent Disney World visitors commented that seeing Tower of Terror reduced to one operating shaft has become surprisingly common. According to those guests, the attraction can lose one of its drop shafts for a variety of reasons, ranging from technical issues to loose items falling from riders during the attraction.
When that happens, Disney doesn’t simply continue operating as normal.
Instead, Cast Members must inspect the affected ride system before bringing it back online. That process helps ensure guest safety, but it also dramatically reduces the attraction’s hourly capacity.
Tower of Terror was designed to move thousands of riders each day using multiple independent drop shafts. When one becomes unavailable, far fewer guests can ride each hour. Even if the interruption only lasts a short time, the standby line can quickly climb beyond an hour.
That’s especially noticeable because Lightning Lane guests continue to enter the attraction, slowing standby movement even further.
Many longtime Disney fans have commented that they’ve encountered the same situation on multiple visits over the past several months. While Disney has not announced any major refurbishment or permanent operational changes, repeated reports have led some guests to wonder whether the attraction’s age is beginning to play a role.
After all, Tower of Terror has been thrilling guests since 1994. It remains one of the resort’s most technologically advanced attractions, relying on sophisticated ride programming, multiple elevators, track switches, and countless safety systems.
As with any complex attraction, occasional mechanical interruptions are expected.
Disney has also consistently prioritized safety over ride capacity. Whenever sensors detect something unusual, whether it’s a dropped phone, another loose object, or an operational fault, affected sections of the attraction remain unavailable until inspections are complete.
While that can be frustrating for guests staring at lengthy wait times, it’s also part of Disney’s approach to operating high-thrill attractions.
For now, Tower of Terror remains open as usual, but guests visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios may want to keep an eye on the My Disney Experience app throughout the day. If additional drop shafts return to service, wait times can fall just as quickly as they rise.
