Disney Reveals New Addition To Haunted Mansion Area at Magic Kingdom

Something new is rising in the Liberty Square area of Magic Kingdom Park. The steel framework now visible near the Haunted Mansion offers the first concrete look at what Walt Disney World Resort has been building behind construction walls for months.

A Framework Emerges

On Tuesday, WDWNT reported that visible steel framework has appeared on the small building across from Memento Mori, a structure that has long functioned as an extension of the Haunted Mansion’s queue. The framework features a slightly sloped roof and an arch-shaped opening on one side — potentially the early stages of a window frame.

Construction walls had surrounded the building since earlier this year, and a previously filed construction permit for “general construction” near the Haunted Mansion had signaled that something more significant than routine maintenance was in the works. A gap now separates the building from the Haunted Mansion itself, created when construction crews removed the Mike Fink Keel Boats landing as part of sweeping changes to the Frontierland and Liberty Square areas.

Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t addressed what the building addition will ultimately look like or how it will function — whether as a continued extension of the Haunted Mansion queue or in some new capacity tied to the changing landscape around it.

The Haunted Mansion remains open throughout its ongoing exterior refurbishment, which has kept scaffolding and themed scrim wrapped around the Liberty Square attraction for several months.

Construction on Every Side

The Haunted Mansion building work is one of several simultaneous projects reshaping the heart of Magic Kingdom Park right now. Frontierland has been an active construction zone since last summer, when the Liberty Square Riverboat, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Rivers of America closed permanently to make way for Piston Peak National Park — a Pixar Cars (2006)-inspired land rooted in the visual identity of America’s national parks. The former island has been demolished, the waterway drained, and construction on the new area is well underway.

Walt Disney Imagineering is designing two unique attractions for Piston Peak National Park: a family-friendly experience and a rally race-themed thrill ride, both distinct from the Cars Land rides at Disney California Adventure Park. A Disney Villains land expansion is also in development for the area beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Neither project has a confirmed opening date.
