In 1977, the world was introduced to 21-year-old Carrie Fisher, the daughter of renowned actress Debbie Reynolds. Fisher played Princess Leia in what would become one of the biggest franchises of all time — Star Wars. Fisher would reprise the role of Leia many times throughout her career. Fans were particularly delighted when she returned as General Organa in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
Sadly, on December 27, 2016, passed away after going into cardiac arrest. Fisher had gone into cardiac arrest while flying from London to Los Angeles on December 23. She was taken off the flight by paramedics, who brought her to a local Los Angeles hospital. She was treated for a heart attack, but did not survive.
It is hard to believe, but seven years have passed since Fisher died. And while it may seem like no time has passed, for her daughter — Billie Lourd –, it has been seven long years.
On the seven-year anniversary of her mom’s death, Lourd penned a heartfelt message on Instagram.
✨❤️✨It has been 7 years since my mom died (but who’s counting?? Me I guess?) Every anniversary brings a different iteration of my grief. Some infuse me with rage, some make me cry all day long, some make me feel dissociated and empty, some make me feel nothing, some make me feel guilty for feeling nothing, and some make me feel all of those things all at once. This year when I woke up I felt grateful – or ✨griefull✨if you will. Grief has infused my life with a sense of appreciation I had never had before. It makes me soak up every moment of joy as if it were my last. Today I was holding my daughter while she was napping in my arms and my eyes welled up with tears of joy. I laughed at myself then cried more cause I was laughing. I felt my mombys presence like the warmth of the sun on your skin on a hot summer day. The kind of warmth where you unknowingly close your eyes and take a slow breath through your nose and grin. I miss her every day but the cliche is also true – she is with me every day – she infuses my joyful moments with even more joy. As I tell my son, she lives in the stars – and she damn sure makes my life sparkle. Sending my love to all my griefers out there. And hoping everyone can feel a little sparkle of griefull among all the feelings grief inevitably brings. ❤️

Lourd was just 24 years old when her mom died, and, sadly, that was not the only tragedy she would face that holiday season. Just one day after losing her mother, Billie lost her grandmother — Carrie’s mom — Debbie Reynolds.
Debbie Reynolds died on December 29, 2016, after suffering from a severe stroke. Reynolds’ son, Todd Fisher, said that his mother was completely broken by Carrie’s death, which contributed to her stroke. He also said that, shortly before her death, his mother had said that she just wanted to be with her daughter so that Carrie would not be alone.
Lourd made her big screen debut alongside her mother when she appeared as Lieutenant Connix in The Force Awakens. She reprised her role in Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017), and again in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Lourd has also starred in a number of hit films and television shows since 2015, including Booksmart (2019), American Horror Stories (2021), and Ticket to Paradise (2022).
In 2020, Lourd became engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Austen Rydell, and they welcomed their son later that year. The pair were married in 2022 and welcomed a daughter that same year.
