Consider this your weekend warning. If you are heading to Walt Disney World this Sunday, April 19, and EPCOT is on your itinerary, there are things you need to know before you arrive that will significantly affect your day.
The runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend is underway, and Sunday is the most operationally complex day of the event. The 10-Miler starts at 5 a.m., and the race operations required to run ten miles through Disney property affect park hours, road access, and crowd levels across the entire resort in ways that guests who did not plan around it will feel immediately.
What Is Different About Sunday at EPCOT
EPCOT opens at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, instead of the standard 9 a.m. Early Entry for eligible Disney resort hotel guests moves to 9:30 a.m. instead of the usual 8:30 a.m. The one-hour delay is a direct result of race operations on the property starting at 5 a.m.
For guests who rely on rope drop, the delayed opening eliminates the primary advantage of arriving early. Every guest, regardless of Early Entry, enters at 10 a.m. simultaneously rather than trickling in over an hour. That concentrated arrival means popular attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and Test Track reach significant wait times within the first 30 to 60 minutes of opening, rather than building gradually throughout the morning.
Guests with Early Entry access should arrive between 9:15 and 9:20 a.m. for security screening to use the thirty-minute early window before the general crowd enters at 10 a.m.
The Transportation Problem
Road closures required for the 10-mile race will add significant travel time across the resort on Sunday morning. What normally takes 10 to 15 minutes from a Disney resort hotel could take 45 minutes or longer due to detours and congestion. Disney buses, monorails, and the Skyliner may all experience delays, adding 30 to 60 minutes beyond normal travel times.
Leave earlier than you think you need to if you are visiting any park on Sunday morning and treat all Disney transportation schedules as approximate rather than reliable during morning hours.
What to Do Instead of EPCOT
Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom are all operating on regular hours on Sunday with normal rope drop opportunities and standard crowd patterns. If EPCOT is not essential to your Sunday plans, those three parks are considerably better options for the morning.
If EPCOT on Sunday is unavoidable, you can use Lightning Lane strategically, focus on the Flower and Garden Festival food offerings for a more relaxed pace, and adjust expectations for wait times from the moment the park opens.
The entire runDisney weekend brings elevated crowds across all of Walt Disney World, not just Sunday. Plan accordingly for Saturday as well.
