Ariel’s Sisters Get New Names And Ethnicities in Live Action ‘The Little Mermaid’

Though Princess Ariel may be the most famous, The Little Mermaid‘s King Triton has seven daughters –  one for each of the seven seas, of course! In Disney’s 1989 animated The Little Mermaid starring Jodi Benson, King Triton and Queen Athena had seven daughters with names all starting with the letter A.

The sisters’ names are Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, Andrina and, the youngest and protagonist of the story, Ariel. Here’s a look at all seven of them together from a 2008 short based on the animated Disney movie.

Ariel, played by Halle Bailey, is the only sister who retains her name in the live action remake. Disney notably received intense backlash due to casting Bailey, a black actress, in the lead role. Ariel’s sisters also deviate from the skin color portrayed in the animated film, but most haters either don’t know, or have left the issue alone for now.
